I love the 3" binder for recipes. The binder lays flat and I can read the recipe without a problem. My granddaughter uses the 1 1/2" for school, and organizes everything in it. My husband likes to put his sports clippings and trading cards in the 1" binder. We enclose everything in see through sheet protectors, then into the binder.
These binders are very sturdy and I have never had to replace one because it didn't hold up to the task, not even with my 3 year old grandson flipping though the pages.
