STAPLES' EXTENDED WARRANTY IS CRUMMY

THE "EASYTECH / LAPTOP...PROTECTION PLAN" BROCHURE FOISTED UPON YOU AT THE STAPLES STORE CONVENIENTLY DOES NOT INCLUDE THE HALF-DOZEN PAGES OF FIND-ON-YOUR-OWN, ONLINE-ONLY "TERMS AND CONDITIONS" IN FINE PRINT, WHICH RESTRICT THE BROCHURE'S FAVORABLE BULLET POINTS HEAVILY.

FOR EXAMPLE, THE $1000 POWER-SURGE COVERAGE ONLY KICKS IN (A SMALL REMAINDER, IF ANY) AFTER YOU FILE WITH YOUR HOMEOWNER'S INSURANCE. ANOTHER EXAMPLE IS THE CONTRACT'S USE OF REFURBISHED PRODUCTS AND PARTS: THAT NEW, GREAT-LOOKING LAPTOP THAT YOU LOVINGLY CARED FOR MAY BE REPLACED WITH SOMEONE'S SCRATCHED-UP BUT REFURBED REJECT.

SPEND NO MORE THAN 10% OF THE PRODUCT PRICE ON ONE OF THESE THIRD-PARTY, CRUMMY WARRANTIES, IF THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY PRICE IS OBSCENE. THAT'S WHAT I DID: ON BLACK FRIDAY, I GOT THE CRUMMY WARRANTY LESS THAN HALF PRICE, ALONG WITH THE DEEPLY DISCOUNTED LAPTOP.

MY ADVICE IS TO BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY DIRECTLY FROM THE PRODUCT MANUFACTURER, BUT ONLY IF IT IS EXCELLENT COVERAGE AND COSTS NO MORE THAN APPROXIMATELY 20% OF THE PRODUCT COST (AND THE PRODUCT COSTS OVER $1000). FOR A $700 LAPTOP, SPENDING OVER 20% ($140) ON A THIRD-PARTY, CRUMMY WARRANTY IS ILL-ADVISED: LAPTOPS, LIKE MANY CONSUMER ELECTRONICS, PLUNGE IN VALUE FAR TOO QUICKLY.

FINALLY, REMEMBER THAT IF THE THIRD-PARTY, CRUMMY-WARRANTY COMPANY ("ASSURANT" AND THE UMPTEEN OTHER-NAMED SUBSIDIARIES UNDER ITS OWNERSHIP) EVER DEIGNS TO GIVE YOU ITS STRINGS-ATTACHED "CASH" RATHER THAN A REFURB, THAT MONEY WILL BE STUCK ON A STAPLES CARD, RATHER THAN IN YOUR POCKET AND IN THE FORM OF U.S. DOLLARS SPENDABLE ANYWHERE.

We had to return the laptop in only two months. Either the motherboard or the harddrive quit working. It was a great disappointment. I will not buy HP again. The store clerk said several had to be returned. We have been waiting over two weeks to get it back from being repaired.

The cost of the warranty is just too high at 1/3 the cost of the computer itself. Not sure if it is 2 years beyond the 1 yr mfg warranty but I think it really only gives you 1 extra year. At $99 a lot more people would buy it!

This product is not what it is cracked up to be. Although some of sales personnel is nice, it does not matter when they refer you back to the manufacturer. You are sent away several times with suggestions on how to correct the problem for that you can do self help on line and save the gas of traveling to and from the store.
