Paper is a better choice than plastic coated. If you want to keep it at the end of the year, just fold it up. Also, the information in the small boxes can be written in either erasable pencil, or un erasable pen. Our family find this useful.
Also, I have had problems with legibility on the erasable version as not all markers work well on them. Or information accidentally gets rubbed off.
So it's cheap, recyclable and you can see the whole year at once. Just fits on the side of our refrigerator and it is where everyone can see it. It won't remind you with an email or a text, but there are no software or communication conflicts with a pencil.
