I use these binders to store printed articles that I need for teaching. If you aren't familiar with the "D" ring does seem to hold more because it makes the top & bottom of the stack flat instead of curved around the ring. Still, this 4" binder will really hold about a 3-1/4" stack of paper at the maximum ("stuffed" but the paper doesn't quite reach the separation joint of the ring). For 24# copy paper, that's between 750-900 pages (no staples or creases). The shape of the ring and the crease in the front cover makes closing the binder, even at maximum sheet capacity, a breeze without the black paper guides (which it does not come with). Flexible design in that the front cover can be opened flat out to the left, or folded behind the back cover if necessary to save desk space while viewing contents. The construction is a rather thin covering of some sort of plastic or vinyl stretched over heavy cardboard. I've used smaller versions of binders with similar construction as school notebooks and know that they do not hold up well to everyday use. However, for organizing and storing documents, these binders are perfectly fine. I have some that I've used for storage for years and they are in pristine condition after years of sitting on a shelf and occasional physical use. They do not have any external clear sleeves for inserting labels or title sheets, so they would not work very well as binders for materials presented to clients. But for organizing and storage of large volumes of documents, I make my own self-stick labels with an Avery hand-held label-maker and that works well. Only real negative is that a 3-4 of the 20 or so of these folders that I own have had a problem with ring closure when the folder is at "stuffed" capacity (see above). The design is supposed to prevent that, but you I have gotten a weak spring on the "One-touch" (just press a lever to open the rings) design and when weakened, the rings do not close all the way.
