No good for desktop computers.
When this unit switches to battery on a power outage, the output power drops to zero for long enough to reboot or shut down any attached computer, before it comes back on. You not only lose your work, but this can damage computers and disk drives. APC has a knowledge base article about this, and recommends the more expensive Smart UPS line if you really need uninterrupted power. "Computers containing PFC (Power Factor Corrected) power supplies and their use with Back-UPS"

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! Due to its "energy saving" design, it powers off until needed. Unfortunately, this design keeps it from switching on fast enough to save a modern computer with a PFC power supply during a power outage. The packaging on the box specifically states that it can be used for computers. There is no mention on the box of any limitation of the type of computer that can be used successfully with this UPS. The older APC UPS units stayed on all the time and did not have this problem.

I'm a grad student in computer science. I lost my high end, home built desktop computer due to this terrible design flaw. My husband and I bought 2 of these units to protect our personal computers. They replaced working older, smaller, APC power supplies that were near the end of their battery life. One unit was not working properly out of the box. Mine appeared to be working OK. Until we had a sudden power outage. The unit did not switch back on fast enough to save my computer. The motherboard was definitely damaged. I had to buy a new computer and spend weeks setting up a new one, this cost both money and precious time. APC Support informed my husband that we "needed to buy the much more expensive SMART UPS" for the type of power supply in my ANTEC case and his as well. Nothing on the APC box for this produce indicated that the unit only worked on some types of computers. APC stated that they had an online FAQ about this issue. Apparently, APC will not stand behind this product and since they posted the online FAQ, APC absolves itself from any blame for the customer's loss.

One unit runs home computer, printer, scanner, FAX, and cordless phone. Because equipment is in bedroom, turning off power-fail beeper no longer wakes me up at night when power fails. Just bought another unit for my new LCD TV and the DVR and Sat RCVR which requires a 10 min reload following power interruption. This keeps the wife and kids happy. This unit also does auto brown-out protection even when power is still on and doesn't draw any battery power to do this. The LCD display gives all the info one could want and measures actual power draw in Watts. This data alone tells you about your equipment that no owners manual ever specs out. A sweet little piece of equipment that adds a lot of value and protection to home electronics.

#3 Note: My first APC was a 7305 "UPS" purchased May 1999, the unit was in service 11 years before it died protecting my Dell computer. 11 years of faithful service with only three battrery changes, that's what I call outstanding! And that's why I now own a new APC Back-UPS XS 1000.

I work in a small office, with only three desktop computers. We have a peir to peir network and I purchased this to use for the one that acts as the 'server'. Although the box was rather large. The actual unit is a reasonable size. I like that it sits vertically, rather than horizontally.

I am very happy with this UPS, it has longer battery life than advertised and was extremelly easy to setup.
