May seem expensive, but well worth it!

I purchased this unit to provide emergency power to give us time to save and close documents on two PCs when power is interrupted. I also wanted reserve power for my cable modem, wireless router and network switches so that we can break out the laptops and keep working when the power goes out.

The construction and power capabilities of this somewhat pricey unit make it a worthy investment. It has an industrial-strength build quality like a classic American product should. The gorgeous OLED? display also offers useful information on the status of the unit that comes in handy. For example, you can keep plugging stuff into it and the display will show you the power draw and reserve power capability--something that you can only guess about with lesser units.

This unit is highly recommended for your emergency power requirements for any of your gear, including Home Theater/AV equipment. Just don't kid yourself into thinking that it will keep everything going for an extended length of time.

Also, keep in mind that the clean power that it provides will extend the life of anything that is plugged into it--especially those that are plugged into the battery-powered outlets. The bottom line is that this UPS is a solid investment.

WARNING: Not compatible with many PCs

This unit delivers a digital stepped approximation to a sine wave when providing power using the internal battery. This is fine for older PCs but new PCs have power quality detection circuits that will cause them to shut down when switched to battery backup with this APC. For example, my Dell Studio XPS shuts down at random times with this unit. DO NOT BUY THIS UNTIL you check your PC for compatibility. If you need something that produces clean power, try the Smart UPS.

Buyer beware. We had an xBox plugged into this battery back-up/surge protector and it blew out during an electrical storm, even though the xBox was turned off. We filled out a considerable amount of paperwork, even included the requested diagrams, waited over 2 weeks, and then found out APC would not back their warranty. They claimed they tested their APC unit and it was fully functional. Yeah, right. The xBox sure wasn't and it was to be protected by this system. Complained and all it got us was a certified letter saying they still were NOT going to stand by their warranty, even though barely into the warranty period. We will never buy an APC product again.

This product works very well for me. Appears to keep line clean and when I occaisionally overloaded the system, the breaker popped at the UPS. Using this UPS I was able to run at a slightly higher load than I could without it.

APC's Back-UPS XS 1300/1500 is a nice clean unit which has bad tech support and bad software which doesn't support Windows 7 64-bit software. Battery tests happen every 9 days with an immediate shutdown, causing damage to the o/s. There is no way to control the unit so these tests are stopped. I used the Personal PowerChute Ed. 3.0 and it caused problems in hybernation as well, which is the mode suggested. Tech support is useless and a waste of time. Do not buy from APC, this product is JUNK!
