We have frequent power fluctuations in our remote area. The satelitte HD DVR equipment is so sensitive it was always automatically resetting which takes five minutes or more. This UPS did the trick. It senses the slightest power fluctuation and prevents the DVR from shutting down. Just be sure to buy the size large enough for the equipment you plan to support. I have used the same product for my computer equipment

During a recent storm in which a power failure occurred, the APC Back-UPS® ES 650VA maintained power to a new computer and monitor for a few minutes, sufficient to save some work and BEGIN shut down. During shut down the battery back up failed, crashing the computer. With some minor research, I discovered the battery backup had overloaded. Regardless, restarting the computer became a diagnostic headache. I'm searching for a new, reliable battery backup.

    Unix systems (Mac OS-X included) dont deal well when the power fails, typically the file system gets corrupted, and you have the fun of reformatting the HD(s) and reloading from backups (you did make backups recently, right?).

    Some UPS is mandatory for such systems, and I recommend one for every computer system as it combines quality surge suppression with constant power enough to get you thru an orderly shutdown.

    Bought this for one of the workstations in our office. Works great, plenty of reserve time. In our line of work it is definitely needed have tried other brands but they have never had the run time this one has, even my higher priced unit does not have the reserve this one does.

    I use this APC back-up unit to both condition the power for my edit bay (keep it within operating specs) and to provide enough time to shut down properly if a power failure happens. This then saves time on re-start.
