I purchased this unit to provide emergency power to give us time to save and close documents on two PCs when power is interrupted. I also wanted reserve power for my cable modem, wireless router and network switches so that we can break out the laptops and keep working when the power goes out.

The construction and power capabilities of this somewhat pricey unit make it a worthy investment. It has an industrial-strength build quality like a classic American product should. The gorgeous OLED? display also offers useful information on the status of the unit that comes in handy. For example, you can keep plugging stuff into it and the display will show you the power draw and reserve power capability--something that you can only guess about with lesser units.

This unit is highly recommended for your emergency power requirements for any of your gear, including Home Theater/AV equipment. Just don't kid yourself into thinking that it will keep everything going for an extended length of time.

Also, keep in mind that the clean power that it provides will extend the life of anything that is plugged into it--especially those that are plugged into the battery-powered outlets. The bottom line is that this UPS is a solid investment.

This unit delivers a digital stepped approximation to a sine wave when providing power using the internal battery. This is fine for older PCs but new PCs have power quality detection circuits that will cause them to shut down when switched to battery backup with this APC. For example, my Dell Studio XPS shuts down at random times with this unit. DO NOT BUY THIS UNTIL you check your PC for compatibility. If you need something that produces clean power, try the Smart UPS.

    I now have two of the same units. I use one of them as a backup power supply for my home computer plus the LCD monitor and it gives me over thirty minutes of run time in the event of a power failure. It also offers protection and line conditioning in the event of a power spike or brown out, these happen very often where I live. The second unit is used as a backup power supply for my router and network switch. This is really useful in the event of a power outage because it keep my home network up and running. These items are a no brainer if you live in an area with frequent power outages and brown outs.

            It will be providing power for the 12 cameras and a PC or power to a PC that is monitoring 12 cameras? If it is the latter, I estimate that this unit will keep your PC going for 20-30 minutes once the the power is out.

            For your security application, you should probably buy a UPS with the fattest battery that you can afford.
