I would recommend this phone to any small business or home office needing more than 2 lines and an intercom feature between stations. The other models in the series (1070 without answering machine but with caller id and 1040 without answering machine and without caller id) are a good value as well. The intercom feature is dependent on wiring. If you have a dsl splitter, ALL of the phones should be on the voice side of the splitter for intercom features to work.

The speakerphone works reasonably well. The menus are a bit awkward but adequate to get things working. The biggest down side is all the phones default to extension 11 when you plug them in to the phone line, so for best results connect the AC adapter and change the default extension before plugging in any of the phone lines.

The answering machine was balky to set up. It is necessary to set 3 outgoing messages. There is an Auto Attendant Day message, an Auto Attendant Night message and a "Private" message. I wish you could shut off that complicated AA stuff and have only one mailbox with one message, but no, the AA menus are still there even if you aren't using any AA features. Still, the answering machine worked well for us in our 2 line setup. We will plan to add 2 more lines this week and will soon know how well this works as a 4 line phone.

This phone was bought for a small business office & is great in every way EXCEPT that the answering machine is not made to pick up if you are using this phone in any way - for example on the other line! This defeats the purpose of having the answering machine on the phone. I even called the 800# to clarify & they said that is correct. You can buy the 1070 & get all the other options & it is cheaper.

Not Happy with this Phone

Comments about AT&T 1080 4-Line Corded Telephone with Digital Answering System:

Not happy with this phone. I have a small home office and needed a quality 2-line phone. After setting it up, I tried to figure out how to assign the answering machine function to just one line. Can't do it. Call comes in on either my home line or my office line, answering machine picks up. I don't need my office phone taking messages for my house line. Called AT&T to see if I missed something. They said no, this phone is not capable of designating a single line to take messages...They suggested I buy a different AT&T phone, at twice the price. Taking it back tomorrow...Waste of time.

Kind of a toy phone system

Comments about AT&T 1080 4-Line Corded Telephone with Digital Answering System:

I installed a phone system with 2 1080 phones and 6 1070 phones at a small school. Based on the sales info, it seemed like a pretty good system for the price.

Until you start trying to use it. In particular, voicemail and the AutoAttendent are underpowered at best. The whole system feels like it was designed by engineers with no input from end users or a marketing research team.

Here are my primary complaints:
1. Although all handsets can get voicemail, only 1080s can actually record a greeting. If you use the AutoAttendent (AA) to navigate to a user with a 1070, you will hear a synthesized voice say "Leave a message for extension x". We ended up replacing all the 1070s with 1080s.

2. For the AutoAttendent to answer a call, its delay time must be shorter than any other phone's DTAD (their word for voicemail) time delay. We set the school's AA delay to 12 seconds, which doesn't give the secretary much time to answer a ringing phone before it goes to the AA. The backup AA is set to 14 seconds. (We needed a backup, as the primary AA won't field incoming calls if the secretary is on the phone.)

3. The DTAD delay for all other handsets is set to 15 seconds. We had to make it this long otherwise the individual handsets will answer incoming calls with their user's personal greeting before the AutoAttendent gets them. This means if the secretary answers a call and transfers it to an absent user, the caller must wait through another 15 seconds of silence before he hears that user's greeting. We have had people hang up during this wait because they thought their call had gotten disconnected.

4. There is no way to retrieve messages left in the school's general mailbox remotely. We can retrieve messages from any extension, but if a user presses 9 for the main mailbox, it can only be retrieved at that specific handset. What were they thinking?

There are more little oddities, but you get the idea. Unless you're on a *very* limited budget, spend a little more on a real business phone system.

We are moving our office location. I bought the new 1080 4 line system to eliminate the compurterized system we used at our old office location.
This phone by far is one the most complicated systems I have ever used.I would not recommend it to anyone.
I got it because it had an answering machine built in. Too complicated to use....

Comments about AT&T 1080 4-Line Corded Telephone with Digital Answering System:

I ordered this model (1080) & the 1070 for a two desk office. We have two separate company phones ringing into this office and I needed a phone that would allow me to do that. These phones do that and I am pleased by the features and the sound. My previous phone system had absolutely horrible sound (speaker & receiver) and this phone makes me turn down the volume instead of turning it up. There is a little bit of breakup on the speaker function if there is any background noise at all and that is irritating. Most of the features work well and set-up was mainly painless. Plug and go for the most part. Where I ran into problems was the answering machine. I could not figure out how to get it set up so I ended up calling customer service who was wonderful and had me up and running with little pain within minutes. DTAD is the answering machine. I am still having a few issues with the answering machine since I can't remember how to delete the calls from the machine so it is filling up on me. Guess I will need to call customer service again. Overall though it was a good buy and works well for our office.
