Works great after some work!

I use this product to present new music to my church praise team. Carrying speakers and power source connection to add to my laptop was a drag. Altec Orbit is far more convenient. The only difficulty is that it doesn't just plug and play with my Mac. I had to learn how to set the sound output every time I open it. And then if I put the Mac to sleep, I get a weird sound from the speaker. The speaker is, however, great once you get used to it (though the cord is only 17 inches).

I purchased this speaker on sale.

This is a USB-only speaker. Both power and sound come through the USB port, so you don't need a separate sound out port to use it. It needs no batteries. However, it is a computer-only speaker. Volume adjustment is computer-only.

I also have the Staples Omnitech compact speaker, which is more flexible (charges from USB port, has a 3.5 mm stereo connector, on-off switch, and volume thumbwheel).

I had a Logitech Laptop Speaker Z205 that I bought from Staples three months ago. I liked that it clipped on to the laptop, easy to transport. It only lasted for for 3 months before it lost sound. I just purchased this ALtec and have used it for a week. It has a great sound, you adjust the sound with your computer and not on the speaker. I would have given it 5 stars except that I don't like that you can not turn it on and off on the speaker you have to unplug it. It works with the computer. The other thing is that is it is round rather that flat and doesn't fit well in my laptop case. If you don't mind this, I think that it is a great buy and will give you great sound. Get the extended warranty so you can get it replaced if it doesn't work out. Staples only has a 14 day return policy without the warranty.

I am very satisfied with the sound quality of this speaker. My laptop speakers aren't loud enough. This boosted the sound to an acceptable level for my presentations.

Amazing volume for a USB powered speaker. My wife and I could easily hear movies from my netbook computer in a motel room. She kept telling me to turn the volume down. Dialog was easy to understand.

DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU USE A MACBOOK!!! THEY DO NOT WORK AT ALL. RETURNING TOMORROW. ALTEC, THIS WOULD BE A GREAT PRODUCT IF IT WORKED ON MACS! PLEASE CREATE ONE.
