Great looking piece, good size drawers compared to others I looked at. A bit of a challenge to assemble, I am handy with tools etc but even I was stumped at times. This was the 2nd one so a bit easier.

I'm leaving a review to warn others about my experience. I purchased two of these filing cabinets through Staples recently when my company moved to a new office. One of the filing cabinets was perfect, I got it all assembled in the expected amount of time, and it works like a charm; I'm very pleased with it. The other cabinet was missing a piece from the box when I opened it; unfortunately, the base, so it's impossible to assemble it without that piece. I was a bit bummed, but the instructions say right on the front page how to go about ordering a replacement part if anything is missing. That very same day, we ordered the replacement part online, and stacked the other pieces in the corner to wait for the replacement to come in. This was on February 23rd. When the part had not arrived a week later, I tried to call the Altra support phone number with no success. First I was a bit surprised to hear the automated message call themselves Ameriwood instead of Altra, but I didn't think much of it. After being on hold for over 10 minutes, I gave up and just thought, "Surely they'll come soon." Tried again several days later, a few times throughout the day, and never got through within 15 minutes; just always the classic, "Your call is important to us, please continue to hold for the next rep..." Finally, yesterday, after waiting nearly a month for this part, I called again and after 12 minutes someone DID answer the call. The customer service rep said that the part had been out of stock when the replacement order was placed, so it closed unfulfilled. She said the part is still out of stock at their regular warehouse, but that she will have an order made from a different house and it should arrive this week. So, take heed: if any piece of furniture you get from Altra is missing a part, I'd recommend going to Staples for an exchange if possible instead of waiting on Altra to help you. I can't believe they weren't even going to let me know the part was backordered; I wonder how long I would have waited if I hadn't finally decided to sit through as many minutes of auto-attendant as it took.

Everything was great when assembling until I was half way through the instructions. It then became quite confusing, however I overcame the ill written instructions and got it assembled. It operates smoothly, looks great and it fits in the space allowed perfectly. It was a great buy for the price!

I bought this lateral file drawer to match my current computing furniture. It looks good but there are some rough edges.

The good: Looks sharp when assembled, has plenty of space inside, heavy so it doesn't wobble, drawers open one at a time, top is handy for a printer or other heavy device.

The bad: Some of the panels do not line up very well. For example, the back panel consists of 2 panels butt-joined with dowels, and there is noticable irregularity. Fortunately, it is up against a wall, so it is not noticeable. Also, it is very important to tap in the dowels all the way, because a dowel may break through the outer finish (happened to me, blistered bottom edge which is against a well). Be VERY CAREFUL moving or positioning pieces, because the edges are very fragile and you could end up damaging the finish. Finally, the metal hanger strips and guides in the drawers are flimsy and virtually useless...there is no friction to hold them and the slightest movement makes them fall off.

Overall, the price was right (bought with a coupon) and it looks great. Took about 2 hours to put together. Just take your time and look a couple steps ahead when assembling.
