Comments about Ames, True Temper Ames® True Temper® Medium Carbon Steel Utility Post Tamper Bar, Round Shape, 1 in (Dia), 71 in (L):

Used it to pry out a relatively large tree stump and lift out many decade old degraded railroad ties used in landscaping. Stump was 20" in diameter but was a few years old so some rotting of the root structure had already taken place.

Used a sledge and wedge (both purchased at Staples) to create a split in the stump wide enough for this digging bar to go in and applied force on the other end. It is pretty incredible how much force you can apply. I am not very big but just putting about 100lbs of my weight into one end of this thing can easily get 500++ ft-lb of torque on the flat end; you can see how a heavier person can exert 1,000 ft-lb of torque with the right technique with minimal effort. This bar is pretty heavy and solid and it started to flex 3-4" so you know it is putting some heavy forces on the target.

Just tore roots going about 3' into the ground right out; the sound it made tearing the stump apart was like the Ents in Lord of the Rings. I could not believe a stump this big could be uprooted with such ease; took me <1hr - very minimal digging, splitting from the top (into about 6 segments), uprooting each segment and fill the hole with dirt afterward. Still left a sizable hole.

Cheapest quote to have this big (and 5 other small) stumps remove professionally was almost $300; no one would attempt it without a backhoe or a grinder. $90 worth of tools (digging bar, sledge hammer, wedge, pick mattock) and 3hrs of exercise (1 hr of this big one, 2 for the other 5 smaller ones) saved me $200. The sledge and mattock handles may break after repeated use but this bar will survive long after I am gone, no problem.

But the few years of rotting made a HUGE difference. Two of the MUCH smaller stumps (<6") but freshly cut took more work to remove than the ones that had started rotting, which were 12-20" in diameter. But they smell quite good being torn apart and out of the ground. Pine air fresheners do not do pine justice.

Railroad ties are beautiful and even when deteriorated, look like old timber. But while fresh timber can rot away in a few years, railroad ties last many decades in a landscaping capacity even after their many decades (lightly used tracks can have their ties last 100 years, no problem); they are super pressure treated and pumped full of chemicals. The ones in our yard were in 30+ years old and channeled storm runoff so deteriorated faster; they are 150lbs and fully settled in the ground but using this bar and a stone, a single person can easily displace it out of the ground.
