These journals are well constructed with good hard covers. The pages are glued rather than signature-sewn (i.e. they are "perfect bound") yet I have never had a single loose page problem even when I use these in the field. Writing surface is not "premium artist quality" at this price range, but is very good and highly satisfactory for fast, clear writing. The portion of recycled paper content does not cause a poor writing surface. Included labels and color-coded adhesive tabs are very useful accessories! Square spines allow clear reading of titles when on a shelf. The convenient size of these journals makes them easy to carry anywhere, yet they are large enough to handle substantial amounts of writing, for drafting long texts, taking extensive notes, or recording long-term projects. And they are dressy and durable enough to serve as archival volumes. All this makes them an amazing deal for their low price. For my high-performance situations I require high-quality tools, and in the course of heavy use I have been very happy with these journals for three straight years now. I only worry that they will change the construction and ruin a great product. As of mid-2007, in my experience these are the best deal in blank books anywhere.
