Does the job for my needs

I'm a student that needs to print-out about 100 pages of reading a week. I had the HP all-in-one before, and of course went through ink like water. I thought it'd be more cost efficient to get this printer (on sale for [$] at the time I purchased it). It IS more cost efficient and fast. It came with a starter toner (which I am still using--probably got about >300 pages out of it so far). I bought an extra toner for about $42 at[@] (the reviews say that you can get about 1200 pages out of it). The set up was fine--it did take some time to go through the manual.Also, the default print setting for the printer is at 600 dpi. I'm trying to save ink and toner and don't need top quality prints for text. As I browsed the internet, I found that the way to set the default to "toner saving mode" and 300dpi is to do it through the brother I.P. address. Overall, I definitely feel that I got my money's worth and realized my HP all-in-one was draining my finances through ink ($60 printer, great deal, right? Not if your ink is $25-$30 for 200 pages!)

Promising, but disappointing

Bought this when our ancient HP-4L finally needed retiring. I'd not been too keen on Brother's inkjets, but this home office laser was well rated on various websites. I looked forward to the its modern features (wireless/ethernet/usb, duplexing, resolution) and great price on sale plus Staples 10% coupon. The HP4L seemed to have better quality in its prime, was quieter and used less power. The Brother's fan is noisy but acceptable because it goes to sleep soon enough. I also needed a stronger UPS, because the Brother's higher wattage crashed my small UPC on power up. But the Brother's convenience, flexible printing abilities and value made up for it's lighter prints and power issues. Unfortunately, after several weeks of light use, the printer continues to fail grabbing the paper in the tray 90% of the time and reports "no paper." I thought it might be due to cheap paper stock, but it failed with better paper, too. Sometimes, the only way to get a print is to remove a sheet and feed it through the manual slot. It's incredibly frustrating and annoying. Thankfully, I added a Staples warranty because the sale price was so cheap, so I can exchange the unit locally without the hassle of a warranty claim through Brother. I'm praying my unit is just a lemon, but we'll see after I exchanged it.

I recently purchased this printer for home. I bought it to supplement an inkjet I have. I realized that I was mainly printing black and white documents so it made sense to add a laser printer since toner lasts much longer than ink, can be highlighted, text looks sharper, and doesn't show through to other side of the paper. This printer is amazing. Very easy to set up. I got it on our wireless network in just a few steps. Due to the size and wireless setup I was able to hide it away in our small apartment. I find it to be very quiet, however, I do have it inside of a closed door in our entertainment cabinet, so I might not be the best judge of that.

My only cons are: The page curling and lack of Cloud Print / AirPrint capability. The page curling isn't the worst I've seen, just typical for a laser I guess. Its weird though, there's an option in the printer to lessen page curling. I turned that on, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Also, Brother has their own app for printing from your iPhone, however, its not easy to work with. My inkjet supports AirPrint, and its unbelievably convenient. Also, my inkjet has eprinting, where you are able to send any attachment to a unique email address and it'll print out at home, I wish Brother had that.

Anyway, those are small complaints. This printer is a great deal and I would 100% buy it again.

The printer was bought for producing our newsletter at a lower cost. We were using an inkjet printer. The time to produce the newsletter was cut by 90%. The only advantage of the inkjet was that it printed in color (I am told that laser printers are available in color). The images and letters on the laser printer are sharp. I would recommend it to anybody who wants to keep the price of ink (toner vs. inkjet) down to a minimum, reducing production time, and having a good looking product.

We have no complaints thus far. Used perhaps twice a day for low volume printing. This is not our main printer. It serves the purpose as a secondary back-up printer. Setting up the Networking was not as easy and seamless as our other printers.

Q:
I just bought this printer (owned for less than 2 weeks)as a replacement for my older Brother 2140. I have printed less than 100 pages and the printer is showing toner low on the printer and in software on my PC.

Is the initial toner cartridge only good for 50 or so pages? Or do I have a defective one?

  The job reprint function is driver based and available on all Brother Printers that are connected to Windows based computers. It does not work for Mac or Linux. So yes this printer has that function, if connected to a Windows computer.

  The Brother HL-2270DW unfortunately would not accept 110lbs card stock. The paper tray accepts 16-28lbs weight paper and the manual feed accepts 16-43lbs weight paper.
