Bought this when our ancient HP-4L finally needed retiring. I'd not been too keen on Brother's inkjets, but this home office laser was well rated on various websites. I looked forward to the its modern features (wireless/ethernet/usb, duplexing, resolution) and great price on sale plus Staples 10% coupon. The HP4L seemed to have better quality in its prime, was quieter and used less power. The Brother's fan is noisy but acceptable because it goes to sleep soon enough. I also needed a stronger UPS, because the Brother's higher wattage crashed my small UPC on power up. But the Brother's convenience, flexible printing abilities and value made up for it's lighter prints and power issues. Unfortunately, after several weeks of light use, the printer continues to fail grabbing the paper in the tray 90% of the time and reports "no paper." I thought it might be due to cheap paper stock, but it failed with better paper, too. Sometimes, the only way to get a print is to remove a sheet and feed it through the manual slot. It's incredibly frustrating and annoying. Thankfully, I added a Staples warranty because the sale price was so cheap, so I can exchange the unit locally without the hassle of a warranty claim through Brother. I'm praying my unit is just a lemon, but we'll see after I exchanged it.

I'm a student that needs to print-out about 100 pages of reading a week. I had the HP all-in-one before, and of course went through ink like water. I thought it'd be more cost efficient to get this printer (on sale for [$] at the time I purchased it). It IS more cost efficient and fast. It came with a starter toner (which I am still using--probably got about >300 pages out of it so far). I bought an extra toner for about $42 at[@] (the reviews say that you can get about 1200 pages out of it). The set up was fine--it did take some time to go through the manual.Also, the default print setting for the printer is at 600 dpi. I'm trying to save ink and toner and don't need top quality prints for text. As I browsed the internet, I found that the way to set the default to "toner saving mode" and 300dpi is to do it through the brother I.P. address. Overall, I definitely feel that I got my money's worth and realized my HP all-in-one was draining my finances through ink ($60 printer, great deal, right? Not if your ink is $25-$30 for 200 pages!)

I use the product for two sided printing and creating tests for school. Very compact duplex printer and works exactly the way one would expect. I would recommend the high capacity toner for the printer if you expect to do a lot of printing. The only part that was difficult was creating the wireless connection as it did not recognize the wireless device. Good thing it has a wired interface so you can get into the printer and set it up through the web interface which works great.

I am really happy with this printer. Setup was really easy, but make sure that you follow the insructions. If you just want to turn it on and fiddle you will never get it to work. My only complaint was the lack of a USB/Printer cable which I needed for initial setup. Luckily I had one for if I had to go back out to buy one I would not have been happy. [...]
