Great Small Office Printer

Our small real estate office needed a new color printer for window ads, listing sheets, and legal documents. We had an HP Laserjet 2600N but we were very disappointed with the color quality. This new Brother HL-4570cdw prints vibrant, clear and crisp color photos, exactly what we needed. Other pluses: goes into deep sleep to conserve energy but has fast start up/print; somewhat easy set up (some of our computers did not recognize the drivers/software. we had to install manually with only the software); great for network printing. After a couple weeks of use, very satisfied so far.

Great until.....

I really liked this printer and had no major issues with it until this week other than occasional having network connection issues from the wireless devices. A drum error message showed saying to clean the corona wires. but even after doing this I continued to get this message even though the drum life remaining said 73%. Finally called Brother-pretty good support after gong through a few menus-had me do the same thing then sent to higher level-nothing really they could do other than clean contacts on outside of drum. didn't work. have always used brother ink-although did cover the eyes to "fool" the automatic shut off. since only 90 days warranty on consumables only choice is to buy a new one- another [$] down the drain. oh well, thats the way it goes. oh yeah got this machine only 7 months ago.

We use this product in a church setting, and it works very good in printing bulletins, etc. Setup for wireless was easy with Windows 7. The order of duplexing took a few minutes to get use to. Colors are sharp and professional.

  It can print labels but it is highly recommended to get good quality label stock that is designed for the high temperatures of a laser printer as well as the internals of the paper feed system. Check Brothers site for their recommendations.

  Although this machine can print envelopes, there is a maximum paper weight allowance. To avoid crinkling or jamming of the machine, use paper that is less than 43 pounds (less than cardstock thickness).

We are looking to upgrade one of the printers in our shop. We have noticed that Quickbooks Pro 2010 has had issues printing from HP all-in-one machines. Do you know if there are any of these complaints with Brother printers?

  1. VERY expensive refills. I don't print that much and all 4 cartridges have run out in 5 months. The replacement cost for the 4 cartridges is $200. Because it's a relatively new model, it doesn't appear there are options other than to buy genuine Brother Products.
  2. The printer just stops working when it deems that the tonner cartridges need to be replaced.
  3. The pages curl up at the ends.
  4. It won't print B&W or grayscale in PowerPoint 2010 even when selecting that option (Brother told me to call Microsoft and have them re-write PowerPoint software to fix this problem, which a complete blow off of a customer).
  5. It works great with a PC, but won't print color photos from a Mac (they come out B&W and won't size correctly).
  6. A little noisy but not too bad (don't plan to have a phone conversation via a speaker phone or headset if you're sitting within 10 feet of the printer while it's printing)

  I currently use Quickbooks Pro 2010 and a Brother all-in-one laser printer. The only problem I have is occasionally it will scrunch the Payee name on the checks. However, it is still very legible.
