I spent many hours over a couple of weeks reading user reviews, full reviews. and visiting all the standard office stores to research my printer. I was replacing an HP 5L that I have had more years than I can remember. First I had to decide, color or b/w. In the end I decided I do not "Need" color. Obviously if you are going to print photos or publish graphics you will want color. Also I decided that the cost of replacing a set of color cartridges exceeds the cost of buying the whole printer again. I already own a very reliable Brother QL-550 label printer so I narrowed my research to Brother and HP. HP had some nice printer but those 2 letters "HP' mean "healthy premium" when you buy their printers. The hardware costs more, and their toner tends to be pricier than others too. I also discovered, HP so far has not released full function Windows 7 drivers for many of the printers they are currently selling. The CP1518ni for example only has a basic driver. I contacted HP and was told that they "May" come out with a full driver." May??? So I should gamble? No way. The choice was easy. Brother printers are Windows 7 ready and included a Windows 7 Driver DVD. Okay so for my review. I'm on day 3 so far and I am LOVING this printer! It's [$] normally but I got it on sale plus traded in my old HP for Staples $50 credit. Setup was easy. I went with the wireless connection. I saw a review saying this printer only supports WEP, that is totally false. I'm connected just fine on WPA2 and the receiver is very strong. It easily recognized routers from all over my street. The auto-duplexing works great! There are many more expensive pritners that don't even come with duplexing. Another favorite feature is you can press go for a few seconds and it reprints the previous job for you which comes in handy if you are printing coupons that only allow one print. I've read that its noisy. I disagree. It sounds like a typical copy machine when you print where the fans spin up. Warmup takes a few seconds, then it prints at a speed that blows away my old HP 5L. It goes back to silence soon as the job ends. The printer is a bit large perhaps for just a b/w printer but its a neatly shaped cube that sits nicely on the table top. I had no issues installing the software on my Windows 7 desktop machine. I also installed the drivers to a laptop computer running windows 7. It found the printer easily, practically fool proof. For someone who is daunted by hearing terms like SSID or WPA2 etc, they may find the setup guide confusing. The instructions definitely assume that the reader has some knowledge of their home network equipment. For those people I suggest getting the neighbor's kid to come over. It has a nice easy web interface view into the printer where you can alter settings and see all the "geeky" stuff you want about firmware and settings etc. I have not tried envelopes yet and as many reviewers said, envelopes are probably a haassle. Even without trying, I can tell. The steps are open the front door, adjust the paper guides for your envelope, insert enveleop, open door on back of printer, push down two levers........wow, too much work. I think I'll probably use my Brother label printer for that. If envelopes are a big deal to you, then for that reason only you may want to look at another model. I'm giving it the 4 star rating solely due to the effort it takes to print an envelope otherwise its 5 stars.

The method of printing envelopes: open the rear panel, push down 2 spring loaded switches, insert the envelope in the front, after opening the front panel and opening flaps, and, after the envelope prints, returning the 2 rear switches to their original position and closing the rear panel and the front panel is ridiculous. This is particularly true if the printer in on your desk against a wall. If you try and load envelopes from the front without opening the rear, the envelope will print, however, the printer wrinkles the envelope. My previous Brother printer had a simple front loading slot for envelopes and stationery. Even the salesreps in the store could not believe it when I returned the printer and showed them this issue.
I purchased this printer because after spending about $60 every month on ink for my Hp inkjet, I finally said enough is enough. I am still running on the original cartridge that came with this printer and I would have easily been out of ink by now had I still been using my Hp printer. I did TONS of research. I wanted to find a printer good for printing coupons on a daily basis that would be less costly per page. This printer saves on ink because it prints in monochrome (black and white only) and it is VERY fast! I love that it is wireless and I love the looks and design of it. It is very sturdy and professional and actually prints more crisp than my Hp did. It has far exceeded my expectations and I am very happy with it. Best of all, there is a compatible ink cartridge available for purchase on [@] that sells for around $80 and yields 8,000 pages. I had been spending about $60 a month on ink with my Hp printer and that only gave me 250 pages, so it was nice to know I could buy a cartridge for the Brother that would cost only $20 more and last two and a half years longer!
Wireless setup is atrocious. I use MAC address filtering on my wireless router, and so I duly printed the printer settings page, before any setup, to get the printer's MAC address. I permissioned that address (00-1b-...) on my router. I then followed the wireless setup instructions in the manual dutifully. After three fails ("failed to associate" on the setup outcome page) trying various guesses at wireless network settings (AES vs. TKIP etc., since my router says "AES+TKIP"), I noticed those fail pages stating a completely different MAC address (64-27-...). I then permissioned THAT on my router's MAC address filtering, and lo and behold the wireless setup worked. Subsequently reprinting the Printer Settings page, that 64-27-... address is now reported at the top where the 00-1b-... address had been. What?! I have never seen a device change its MAC address before. Poor behavior by this printer (it should not do that), and poor documentation if they knew it was going to do that. This makes setup AWFULLY hard...
Does this printer have sort / collate capability? For example, if I am printing 10 copies of a 6-page document, will the printer produce one set of pages 1 - 6 and then another set of pages 1 - 6, and so on? Or will it print 10 copies of page 1, then 10 copies of page 2, and so on?
The noise level on this unit is detailed in the manufactures specs as the sound pressure. This printer has the following specs for noise : Printing: LpAm 54dB; Ready: LpAm 35dB, Sound Power: Printing: LWAd 7.0B; Ready: LWAd 4.8B.

A:
Because this is a high speed laser printer it will be a little noisier than your average slow slow speed printer.

Q:
Does anyone have experience printing Avery or similar labels on this machine? We do mass mailings of approx. 1,700 labels and I'd like to know if anyone finds this machine reliable and easy to use when printing labels. Thanks for your time.
To quote a user; "I do a lot of address label printing, often just using a few labels from a sheet. Sometimes the printer will badly crinkle the sheet, making the rest of the sheet unusable. I had to change how I print to the labels sheets (from the bottom up and by row instead of by column). That has helped but has not eliminated the problem."

Q:
I have an HP officejet wireless 4500 which has to be unplugged and replugged because of its faulty sleep mode. Literally dozens complaints regarding this problem. I need a good wireless printer that will also print from my iphone and ipad. The HP 6500 has the same problem as the 4500. Does this product connect easily with my router and stay connected?

This product will connect easily to any wireless network. However the issues you are describing are very odd so I can not say if you will or will not see the same problems with a new printer. You may want to look into your router and seeing if the problem is on that end.

Q:
I intend to use this printer to print documents that have both legal and letter size paper, alternately, throughout the document. I notice that this printer has a 50-sheet, multi-purpose print tray in addition to the standard 250-sheet tray. If I put legal (8.5 x 14) paper in the smaller capacity tray and letter-size in the larger tray, will this printer automatically recognize when the next page in the document is legal or letter size and print from that respective tray automatically?
The flexible paper handling an ample 300-sheet paper capacity helps reduce the number of times you have to refill the paper tray. The printers have an adjustable 250-sheet capacity paper tray that handles up to legal size paper. The printer won't automatically recognize page size.

Q:
I just bought this printer yesterday & printed envelopes today - it's severly wrinkling the envelopes. I chose the printer option to reduce curling, but it didn't make any noticable difference. What do I do so it doesn't wrinkle the envelopes when it prints the address? I print alot of envelopes & thought checking the reduce curling was supposed to solve this issue.
I apologize for the difficulties you are having with printing envelopes. Unfortunately, we are not authorized to provide technical support. Please contact Brother at (800) 284-4329 for further assistance.
