I used MF HP printers for yeas, but abandoned them due to their poor quality. Wanting a multifunction capability, I found this printer. The primary reason I purchased this one was the ability to print on 11x17 paper. This capability usually brings a big price jump, especially with laser printers.

I have been using the printer since July and it has performed well. The fax and scanning capability work well, the menus are generally intuitive and easy to use, and the scanning function works well. One of the benefits of the 11x17 printing is a larger scanning area for scanning/copying larger documents. That was not a reason I purchased this unit, but it's nice to have once I had it.

The printing color is a bit washed out, but acceptable. The construction is a bit flimsy for what it does, but most lower priced printer are all using plastic parts. The other downside is that the 11x17 paper tray sticks out of the bottom quite a bit and increases the units footprint. Furthermore, the output paper tray is really sized for 8 1/2 x 11 not 11x17, so the larger paper has a tendancy to fall on the floor rather than sit in the tray. All of this is forgivable given it is the only unit that prints 11x17.

I purchased a Brother color laser printer in conjuction with this printer. MF printer are notorious for low reliability, so I purchased the color laser printer for my heavy, day-to-day printing and the MF for scanning, fax, and printing 11x17 (which I do much less of). This put less work-load on the MF printer, and hopefully, will increase its lifetime. So far that strategy has worked.

All-in-all, a great MF printer.

I just got the printer, so I don't yet know how durable it is. The one thing I am very disappointed about is the ink quality. The 'black' print (my biggest use - printing letters and documents) is not nearly as vivid as on my old HP printer. I have used HP printers for years, and when a plastic part snapped on the last one and could not be replaced, I found the current line of HP printers to be really shabby- but it looks like I will miss the HP inks! The black ink on this printer is 'dusty' - not a real true black - If I return the printer it will be due to the ink quality

Prints are great, copies are great, however as with all the other printers I have had. It picks up two pages every time it prints a page on photo paper.

I've only had this printer for a week. This is the first non-HP printer I've purchased in over 15 years. Time will tell if this was a smart move or not. Use it for creating work manuals and forms. Was not looking for a photo printer, but did expect the black text to be sharper than it is. Both color and black has a faded look. Love the fact you can print, scan, copy 11x17. Like the 4 separate ink carts, and the ink price is much better than HP's. The set-up was quick and easy. Wireless connection was quick and flawless. Brothers' software loaded on a 64 bit Vista system and took off running. Longevity is the only question not answered so far. Please Brother, DO NOT DISAPPOINT.

Thank you 'Brother' for finally filling a gap!
I've been searching for this all-in-one for years.
I bought it for my small landscape design studio couple months ago...and so far LOVING IT.
It has all the functions I need including 11x17 print and scan size for not much money.
Brother MFC-6490cw will be a hit with designers but they have to work on the appearance of the printer.
I looks ashamed next to my hip imac :( well maybe the next generation...

I am not usually willing to be among the first to use a new product. My feeling is that I want other people to work out the kinks and such. This prin ( ter had some kind of defect right out of the box. The rear cover would not stay closed. [...]looks more like a design flaw to me, IMHO ). So I had to go through the trouble of a product exchange. [...]When the replacement printer came, it was a quick and easy set up, and so far has performed flawlessly.I am hesitant to extoll the virtues of this printer, as I've only had it a week or so. I'll just say, "so far, so good."
