I was advised by someone I trusted to buy a Brother All-in-One machine for my home office. I checked for user reviews online in as many places as I could. The Brother MFC 8220 did not have that many, but they were all positive. Other machines seemed to give their users some level of inconvenience; such as frequent jamming, excessive noise, heat, or power consumption.
Although this machine is network capable, you have to purchase a separate network card. since that was not an issue for me, I did not mind. I can't say that I use anywhere near all of this machines capabilities, but it has performed everything well. It is a great laser printer, great copier, and great fax machine. I was concerned about not having a flat-bed scanner to scan odd things into a file, but I have not needed that yet, and have an scanner with another pc in the house. I am very happy that I purchased this unit and would do so again. I think it jammed once on me in the 3 months I have owned it. I was feeing an envelope I think, which is a little different. You quickly learn how to feed so that the machine "grabs" the sheet and then takes it.

We purchased this machine less than a year and a half ago (7/09) and it was working great up until yesterday. In fact I would have highly recommended it. However, while receiving a fax, we heard a terrible grinding noise and the machine completely stopped working. After removing a side panel, we found one of the gears had fallen off and the plastic piece it was attached to had disintegrated. When I called Brother and explained that the machine was defective, I was told it was out of warranty and I would have to pay for repair. We have several other Brother printers in this office. Needless to say, the replacement machine will not be a Brother.
Comments about Brother MFC-8220 Laser Multi-Function Printer, Sheet-fed:
I have owned 2 of these all in ones, as well as other Brother all in ones. We use this for a business. We print hundreds of documents a day, as well as dozens of faxes. Both units I have owned have had issues making copies. We make hundreds of copies per day. Quite frequently, when you are making multiple copies of the same document, the machine will stop and give you an error. You have to turn off the power and wait for it to reboot. Once this happens, it will continue to do so over and over. Both printers I have owned have done the same thing. I have had few problems with jamming, and get great life out of both the toner (use the higher quantity toner) and the drum. The unit will make thousands of copies after it tells you the drum needs replaced soon, so do not replace until the drum is completely used up.

This product does not have a flip top copier, so it is impossible to copy pages of different sizes. If you only ever need to copy 8.5 by 11, it would probably be fine.

I have been using the MFC 8220 for 3 years and I am very please with it's performance and durability. Our office expanded so I was very happy to find another one available. These machines are easy to use and maintain which is a good thing because they get heavy use.
