We've only had this machine for about a week now, but so far we're happy! It's a bit large, but you'd have to consider it rather compact for all the functions built into it. Controls are intuitive and it prints quickly (compared to the last printer we had, anyway). Only complaint so far is that when printing text, the print seems a bit light. Haven't yet had to replace cartridges or drums, etc. and I'm sure we have more to learn about this machine, but the early reviews are positive!

Beware of multiple network connections

This unit (and all other Brother multifunctions) have a problem with scanning to PC's that have multiple network connections. I have customers that only use laptops with docking stations which means that they might have at least two network connections active at the same time (wireless and wired). The Brother unit scans to the PC based on the machine name instead of IP so it gets confused when a machine name has two different connections. It should scan to the IP instead so it wouldn't matter if there were 14 active connections. This has been going on for years. Brother is too lazy to fix it. Brother farms out their support to a horrible 3rd-party company whose sole purpose is to find a way to blame the end-user. I have spent hours and hours trying to resolve this with the highest level of Brother support (none of the support, no matter what the level, are knowledgeable) and the answer was always the same: Brother doesn't support multiple connections. Finally, when I was about to give up (with one of Brother support's highest level drones on the phone), I noticed an option to scan to a folder option in the settings. Scan to a folder allows you to enter a machine name OR an IP address of the machine. This is not a perfect solution because I have to enable sharing on the machine and enter a username and password on the the Brother that may change over time. But it works. After all the hours of grief on the phone with a dozen Brother "support" personnel not one person mentioned this as a work-around -- I had to figure this out myself. Horrible experience.

As an aside: When the last support person found out I had an active VPN connection as well, which gave me 3 active connections, his tune then changed from "we don't support multiple connections" to "it's not working because of the VPN connection". He then proceded to give me a lecture on how VPN's work and why the Brother will never scan to a PC that has a VPN connection. He obviously had very little knowledge of VPN's (I've been maintaining VPN's for almost 20 years) but that didn't stop him from going into this bizarre, incorrect lecture on the workings of the VPN and why Brother can't be expected to support such a configuration. It was at this point I found the option to scan to a folder.

To Brother: Fix this problem. You have known about it for years. At least advise your support contractors about the work-around. Also, tell the support contractors to quit acting like this problem is "news to them" when they must have known about the problem even longer than you. Finally, find another support contractor.

After just 60 days of small office operation, we've had trouble with it not recognizing new cartridges and drum malfunction; drum now must be replaced. It's very noisy; I cannot use phone when it's printing. Also learned that Staples 3-year extended warranty ends as soon as machine is replaced, even after just 60 days. Also: Staples tech was going to replace machine when it turns out a simple software reset- which is not described in user manual or on Brother website FAQs- was all that was necessary, until next time that is.

  You may buy the 4 cartridges separately. Most printers will only print with all cartridges installed.
  
  The MFC-9460CDN does need to have all four cartridges but you only need to replace what is empty.
