We had an Epson Workforce 610 before this...it worked great for about 10 months and then it started to breakdown. The auto-document feeder started to jam and skip pages. We tried an HP after that, but it was not up to par--it scanned and printed really slowly. We decided we didn't need a color inkjet, so we went with the Brother.
This unit seems to get the job done. It's not huge and overbearing. The settings are customizable, which is nice. It's just really loud. It has a fan that runs when it's printing/scanning so it doesn't overheat, so you don't really want to have it on a desk next to you. I can't hear people on the phone when the fan is on. Luckily, it turns off if it's not in use for a certain amount of time. Other than that, this seems to do the job.
The starter laser cartridge only prints about 600 pages (in eco mode), but the replacement, full-sized cartridges are only about $44, so it's pretty reasonable.

Purchased the 7860DW in approx. November 2011 from Staples in Chandler, AZ. Set it up as specified, however, did not connect to computer or setup as wireless. Planned to do this later, after the holidays. Initially, my wife made about six copies to check quality of print, which was good. The machine stayed off, and covered, until February 13, 2012. When turned on, an error code of "PRINT UNABLE 72" showed on LCD. Turned off and on a number of times, but to no avail. Called customer service and they ran me thru a couple of proceedures, which didn't work, then told me to take it in to be serviced or they would send me a "Refurbished" unit for a replacement. No other choices, so I elected to go with the "Refurbished" model. They said the replacement unit would have same 1-year warranty, plus 30 days. I'm in my 60's and have purchased a lot of electronics over the years including some from Staples. First time I've experienced a failure. Still, can't recommend this machine based on such a quick failure.
Comments about Brother MFC7860DW Laser Multi-Function Printer:
A decent AOI for the price, sturdier than many, good features, reliable. Network setup improved over earlier similar models. Too slow & print quality not good enough for more than home office use. All Brother lasers require replacement of both toner cartridge & less often the drum - very expensive! One beef: Brother's downloadable iPrint app is very disappointing for iPad use: printing is only possible from within the app itself and then only from browser, photos or clipboard; it is extremely limited functionally - no Mail, no Notes... Don't get this for your iPad!
No, the Brother MFC7860DW Laser Multi-Function Printer does not print in color.

Q:
I work remotely from home and VPN into my office network - but this printer will not print anything when I am VPN'd in. I have to log off to get anything done - I've checked the Brother Q&A and this is not addressed. Help! How do i get it to work when I am on my company's network? Thanks!
You will have to attach this printer to your company’s network so the wireless address will be recognized. For further technical support please call Brother at (800) 284-4329.
