We fax out only once or twice weekly so volume is not our need. We fax "in" using free efax service so "ink" is not as issue either (we print as needed on computer printer). We liked it so much, we bought a second one!The machine is nice and compact, includes a phone, sets up so easily and it's ready to go!Bought a Magic Jack phone system & GREAT DEAL on Brother Fax Machine. BOTH work great! Saves us $100s annually.

I purchased this item through a “special deal” very cheap. I’ve read several of the comments about the machine, but there’s one thing that I don’t see explained, and I wish I had known about it before I had made my purchase.

This is indeed a “plain paper” fax machine. But it does NOT use “toner” or an “ink cartridge”. It uses a “ribbon”. What they call the “ribbon” is actually a looooong sheet (spool) of carbon paper (or something like it) on a roll. The number of pages you receive equals the length of “carbon paper” which will be used, no matter if the entire page is filled with print, or only two lines. I’ve also seen people complain about the quality. Again, I remind you that the machine uses “carbon paper” and you should expect “carbon paper” type results. Personally, I’m not looking for great detail in the faxes I’m receiving anyway, so it’s fine. Though I rarely receive faxes, and mostly just send them, it’s still going to use-up the roll of “carbon paper” when the machine is unsure if the fax you were sending to received the fax you were sending. . . because it prints-out a notice. Printing-out a notice takes-up one page on your “carbon paper”. I have read where some people have said that they rolled the carbon paper back onto the spool, so that they could get more use out of it. Well, the risk with that is that if you’re receiving an important fax, and it happens to be at the place on the spool where another fax came through. . . then you’re probably not going to be able to read your important fax because the “carbon paper” spools were meant to be used once, and there’s not going to be any “ink” left for the machine to print. The reason that this machine is so cheap is not because it’s a bad machine. . . but because you’re going to have to keep purchasing the rolls of “carbon paper”.

I think, in the end, you have to look at the overall cost. Compare the cost of this machine, along with having to purchase the rolls of “carbon paper”, and then compare it to a fax machine which uses toner or an ink cartridge and see. . . price wise. . .which is going to work best for you. If you’re only sending faxes, and never receive, then you and re-roll the “carbon paper” after it runs out from printing notices, and you should be fine.

      Comments about Brother® Personal 575 Plain-Paper Fax:

I bought this machine for business use after having a similar Brother model for 5 years. I'm here today looking for a new machine. I have had problems from day 1. Had to call Brother 1st day and issues getting worse. It won't print the whole 2nd page of fax, only 1st, 3rd, etc. It will copy a full page sometimes. It has a beep every 30 minutes and has been reset by Brother and still does it. I was given the option of shipping it to a service center but it would have cost more than I paid for it. And since I had created a ticket with Brother the store would not let me return it. I have had many Brother products that were great. This particular one is just a lemon. Today I will be shopping for a new machine. This one is going in the garbage. I don't want to take any chances on someone else getting my problems by recycling it.

I bought this fax for the convenience of having it in my home. I send/recieve only about a dozen pages per month, but this fax and price were right for my needs. I have had no problems with it so far, it doesnt hold much paper, but it holds more than I need. I had no trouble connecting the fax to my phone line.

          Comments about Brother® Personal 575 Plain-Paper Fax:

I got it for really discounted price after mail-in rebate and so I have little to complain. It is as good as it should be for a low price. Before I bought it I used to use a scanner / Fax Modem to send my faxes, so having a stand alone fax machine is a privilege for me. I wished the toner cartridge was more like an inkjet type because this one always uses like a whole page worth of carbon-copy like thing even when the actual print-out might have been just a failed delivery notification. But I have managed to reuse the ink cartridge many times over and I totally recommend it for a low volume occasional home use.
