This is a dedicated refill for a Brother label maker that we bought several years ago. We needed the refill right away to label stuff for our kids going to camp, but unfortunately, the store was out of 2-packs of this item. The single item is more than half the price of the 2-pack, which is already rather high. Since there is no substitute, without buying a whole new machine, we're stuck purchasing the item at whatever price it's sold at. It works well, although occasionally jams and needs to be re-threaded. And each label produces 1/2"-1" of waste, as there is a lead to each label that needs to be cut off.

I have printed labels for plant stakes in my flower garden. The print is large and clear, however I won't put them outside until the weather improves. Therefore, I don't know how well they will hold up in the outdoors. They do seema little pricey.

          Stated most of it above; very pleased with the variety of styles and colors, machine itself is easy to use, attractive and compact.
          Biggest gripe is the cost of tape, and that the machine, by design, uses an inch of tape that simply has to be thrown away, compelling you to buy more.
