If you're looking for a simple and reliable "specialty" label printing solution I can highly recommend the PT-1230PC. Setup couldn't be easier. Simply install 6 AAA batteries (not included), snap in the included tape cassette, close the lid and connect to an available USB port (cable is supplied). When you press the Power button (located on the top of the printer), the built-in printing software automatically launches and the unit is ready to use. Next, just type your text in the box and click the Print button. The manual cutter button works very well. If desired, you can easily edit the font (and it's various attributes), add boxes, insert images, change orientation (landscape, portrait, direction of text) and other details before printing. You can also save labels that you might want to reprint in the future. Brother offers an "advanced" editor that can be downloaded at no charge however for this type of printing I can't imagine the need for any features beyond those are included in the built-in version. That said, I believe the "advanced" version includes some pre-designed templates for users who want to add a more artistic touch to their labels.

Changing tape cassettes takes less than half a minute so using different tape sizes and color combinations isn't at all difficult.

Just keep in mind that the tape is rather costly and the maximum label width is 1/2 an inch. This being the case, I recommend using the labels for things like jars, small boxes, bags, file folders, electronic equipment, cables, bar codes, etc., rather than for addressing envelopes, packages and the like.

I noticed the ad stated "AC Adapter Included" however this is incorrect. Some of the more expensive models DO include the adapter however for occasional use I expect the AAA batteries will last for quite a long time and it's one less "wall-wort" sucking up electricity 24 hours a day. In any case, the printer will launch a "Continue" box after a few minutes of inactivity. If you don't select this, the unit turns itself off to save batteries.

So all things considered, if you can afford the somewhat costly "TZ Series" label refills this unit is well suited for home and small/home office use.

The good...no software required, although installing the driver and application from Brother increases printing options. You can include graphics of your choice with the supplied software, although detail is so-so.

The not so good...each label has about 3/4" of blank tape at the beginning of the label, due to the design of the machine. Also, NEVER try to update the embedded software in this thing without the drivers installed, as it will render it useless. In order to fix the problem, it was necessary to install the drivers, and then find (with great difficulty) the update utility on the Brother web site. Once re-programmed, it worked fine. Also concerned about the battery life, since it uses 6 AAA cells, but I haven't owned or used it long enough to say so definitively. Brother email support is pretty much useless. Their response to an email about the update fiasco was to call their support number. Why have email support is this is the case?

In general, it's a bit easier to use than other Brother P-touch machines with their tiny keyboards, and CODE and ALT keys.

Comments about Brother®P-touch® PT-1230PC PC Connectable Label Maker:

I love this label maker, my files have never looked this good! My only complaint is the long tape length that feeds before the print begins, making the labels too long to fit on letter size file folders without hand trimming. To get around that I type a bunch of labels in one long line and then cut them apart with scissors. It works but the labels end up all different lengths and renders their cutter unusable. Still it's much easier than using Word to print file labels and the results are nicer.

Comments about Brother®P-touch® PT-1230PC PC Connectable Label Maker:

I got this label maker because I needed one for my office and got tired of borrowing one from other people. I used a great coupon to save even more but I thought the price was great even without the discount I received. I love the sleek design, which is prefect for small spaces or tucking it away. The fact I can see the label on the computer screen is a major plus for me. My only complaint is as with the last label maker it leaves too much blank space in front of the label. I always have to trim at least 1/2 an inch. A waste of tape, but apparently there's no way around. This model does have a feature that keeps it from doing the same extra space on the back end of the label. It's SO easy to use, just plug and play, simple to add cute graphics, and I love that I can use so many more fonts and get really creative with my labels.

The Brother brand sells laminated P-Touch tapes that are resistant to water and sunlight, which means that they won't fade, and they can stick to virtually any surface.

Unfortunately the directions only cover instrustions for XP, Vista and if you can believe it Windows 2000. So I don't know if it will or not. It seems to me that it would work, considering you don't have to install any drivers. You can take this from machine to machine and it works with its own internal software.

We have dated XP at our office, but if I take this home where I have Win 7, I'll definitely update my answer and let you know if I had any problems.
