Rethinking Printer Design

Very easy setup, both wired and wireless. I did both, first wired to make sure that the printer worked before tackling what I thought might be a bigger challenge of getting wireless working, and then wireless, where I am leaving it.

It turned out that getting wireless to work was very simple, using the "one-push setup" described on page 35 of the Quick Setup Guide. Then, once I had wireless working, AirPrint from my iPad worked immediately, without any further setup operations.

Congratulations to Brother on producing excellent documentation, and for the innovative design of the unit, itself. The "footprint" is remarkably small for a unit with all of the functions and paper handling features of this one. The touchscreen operation is just about perfect, with well thought out control placement and easy operation. Display quality of the touchscreen is excellent.

Printing, both black-and-white and color, is quick, double-sided printing is just one setting (I had been doing this manually before), and print quality is at least good. As I just installed the unit, I am working with the default output quality settings (whatever they are). In default mode, black and white is not quite as sharp as my old laser (Brother MFC-7820N), and color, while fine for business graphics, is nowhere near up to photo quality. Now, this may be because either I am using ordinary inkjet paper, or haven't found the settings for photo quality output, or both, but that's where I am, so far.

Anyway, out of box experience was excellent, as is printing speed. I don't know if I can amend a review once written but, if I can, I will come back after I have had a chance to tinker with the output settings. In any case, my initial impression is highly favorable, and I would enthusiastically recommend this printer to anyone, with the one caveat to check further if they need super-high-quality output.

Most Helpful Negative Review

Really Doesn't Work Very Well

I thought I'd bought the perfect printer to replace a color laser printer that I couldn't get to work wirelessly. After returning it and having the Staples associate rave about this new Brother, I thought I'd give it a try.

I've spent more hours than you can imagine tying to get it to work consistently with my wife's Mac. I followed the setup instructions to a T, got it to work on the 3rd try but then after it's idle for a while, it somehow loses the connection.

I tried calling Staples, since it says on the back of the extended warranty jacket that if you "Need Support?" you should call such and such number. After describing my problem, I was told they would have to connect me to Brother which, naturally, was closed for the weekend.

I'll call Brother on Monday to see if they can fix the problem but I don't want to connect via USB as this printer needs to be accessible by my daughter's Macbook and my iPhone. If not, it's more useful to me as a boat anchor.

As for when it does work, I have to say, I've never seen such a bad color print result. I use Brother b&w laser printers in my business and am very happy with them and after being fed up with HP ink clogging and software issues, I really wanted to get a printer that would be easy to set up and offer decent (not perfect) print quality. I got neither in this printer.

Caveat Emptor - buy at your own risk.

glad that the cartridges are individual and not just "color". Glad to get lots of pages per cartridge, but I can see why - the print is so faint.
Maybe I will see how to improve this - just new so far.

This is the noisiest printer I have ever encountered. It makes ticking noises and stops printing to think way too often. The print orientation is random and does what it wants. I can print 2 copies and one will come out one way and the other will be sideways. It's very cheaply made and very flimsy. There's not much I like about it. I've always bought HP and this printer was advertised on TV and it looked like something we could use here in the office. I was wrong. I am talking to Staples about returning it. I will stick to HP.

This is largely an out-of-the-box solution that is very easy to use. The wireless set up was not as smooth as I would have expected, and I spent nearly two hours trying to get it to work. Ultimately I ended up going with a tethered solution.

The other "oops" is the CD. It is really hard to tell whether or not you need it because the minute you turn on the printer the computer goes through its own load of drivers, etc. We ended up with 2 copies of the printer in our "devices and printers" menu.

Despite that, I am VERY happy with all facets of the product, and we've used it for faxing, copying, and (of course) printing. It is far superior in quietness and speed to my HP 5700J series.

I am returning this product. Very dissapointed. Hard to configure to wireless (WPS did not work), clunky software, loud and sounds like its going to blow up when the printer engages.

  According the user guide from the manufacturers website, there isn't anything regarding scanning negatives or slides. The only supported image types found in the manual are photo, web-page, and text.

  The Brother MFC-J4510DW printer gives a maximum sheet weight in the paper tray and manual feed as 58lbs. The maximum weight for the ADF is 24lb. You'd possibly be able to use the 65lb cardstock in the paper tray and manual feed, but I wouldn't even try using the 110lb cardstock in this printer.

  This printer is compatible with Windows 8, both 32 and 64 bit. I purchased it yesterday, and downloaded drivers from the Brother support site, to which I was directed by the set-up disc.
  
  It does have SD card readers, as well as PictureBridge.
