Nice concept, poor execution

Comments about Brunton Bump USB Solar Battery Charger:

This was online as a special for a little under $6 shipped. The concept looked good... a little box with a battery that is recharged by the sun to boost your phone when it is just about out of juice (you can also recharge the box directly). Sometimes I forget to charge my phone and have to run out somewhere and it seemed to fit the bill as a supplemental power source.

Unfortunately, while the concept is good and there may be good products out there, this isn't it. The battery inside is much too small to make a difference and once it is exhausted the phone justs starts going between charge and recharge cycles as the outside light gets brighter or dimmer. Not good for your phone I assume. The box, fully charged, gives me about 10 minutes of charging on the phone if I'm not doing anything and then it starts to bounce as stated above.

Even if it did work, the box plugs directly into the phone's charger socket and not very well. I can also see if you hit the phone / charger you could bend or break the connectors.

So even for the cheap, cheap price it's not worth the money. Since it was more of a "test" purchase to see if it would work, I threw it away and just chalked it up to experience.

Not the best, but fun to play with...

Comments about Brunton Bump USB Solar Battery Charger:

I wouldn't normally have bought one of these, but they were on sale for a very low price + free shipping and I bought one to toy with. The price is cheaper than you could buy even a bare 550mah lithium cell for....

These units appear to have been discontinued by Brunton, as there is no mention of them on their website. The unit itself is quite small and could be easily stuck in various small pockets.

The biggest problem I have with this unit is the charging connector. It has almost no reach from the face of the unit. If you have any kind of case on your phone, this is not likely to fit.

Solar charging is indicated by the blue led indicator... and it takes quite a bit of light. Don't expect it to charge from solar except in bright daytime sun. And obviously, this unit only has 550mah battery, so don't expect a full charge to your phone. Thankfully it can be charged by USB as well, and that goes pretty quickly.

Annoyed with the connector limitation, and unable to use the charger with my S3 in its case, I decided to void the warranty and see what was inside the unit.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, here's what I did inside mine...

Amazingly it isn't ultrasonically welded shut, and pops open easily without damage. The solar panel is part of the case, installed in the housing and then forever potted in with clear filler from the outside. The connections to the PCB inside from the solar panel are very fragile foil ribbon you will need to desolder to go any further. Mine had a battery with a date code of 2012, indicating that these were on the shelf for awhile. The battery was not charged when i got it, but it did charge up just fine. The board is of decent quality, and appears to be OEM by http://www.gzonan.com, onan products, who made these for Brunton. Since both the solar panel and the battery are below 5v, the board is fairly complex and contains a boost regulator to get 5v from the 3.7v nominal battery and /or solar cell. I removed the original micro-usb plug and cut the end off a mico-usb cable and wired it in. It's usable now with its newly extended cable, and I'll see how it does long term. It had no problem charging my Galaxy S3 or 2014 Note 10.1.

Comments about Brunton Bump USB Solar Battery Charger:

I bought this unit to charge my cell phone or android tablet when I was away from home (ie camping). I like that the unit is completely solar power so it can be used wherever I am! It is also inexpensive and very simple to use with its plug-and-play design. The bulk of the device seems sturdy however the kick-stand they put on it is quite flimsy and seemed more like an after thought.

On the con side of the fence the device is utterly useless if you do not have unmasked, direct sunlight. I was trialing the device today and have found that it will not generate enough power from lights indoors and if there is any cloud cover. Overall, if you are frequently away from a wall or car charger this will do in a pinch. I would not buy this if you are looking to charge your phone in a "green" way on a daily basis though.

Battery DOA

Comments about Brunton Bump USB Solar Battery Charger:

I tried several times to charge three different devices including a cell phone and none recognized the battery charger. I allowed the battery to charge in sunlight at least three times and under a lamp twice. I would not recommend this product because it failed to work from the beginning. The charger does not deserve even one star from me but a rating is required in order to post a review. Buy one of these chargers if you feel lucky!
