    Comments about Buffalo Technology LS-WX2.0TL/R1 LinkStation Duo 2TB (2 x 1TB) 2-Bay NAS Drive:

We had a work project that happened to generate a lot more data than usual. I got this LinkStation for backing up that project's stuff to keep our normal backup device from overflowing. I delegated the job of implementing the LinkStation to one of my techs. Later, she said that setting it up was a chore, it transferred things kind of slowly, but otherwise did the job.
The project is over and I have had a chance to see about re-purposing this LinkStation to be a peripheral for my own workstation. I hate it and think it is a poor value for the money. Here are the reasons why:
    1) Default is RAID 0, a storage scheme that was useful 20 years ago for speed and capacity but does nothing for data safety. RAID 1 is what you need for some degree of data protection.
    2) The HDD's inside are cheap, 5400 RPM models from 2 or 3 years ago (I know this because I have pulled them out so I can add them to desktop PC's. I am throwing away the LinkStation chassis).
    3) The setup menus and the power-on light are very slow and may make you think that something has frozen.
    4) The only allowed type of disk format is XFS. If one were to use RAID 1, and needed to pull a disk for reading elsewhere, a typical PC could not read it.

          • A:

The LS-WV2.0TL/R1 only supports up to 4 terabytes of storage while the LS-WX2.0TL/R1 supports up to 6 Terabytes. Other than that there doesn't seem to any other noticeable differences.
