Bush Somerset 71" L-Desk, Hansen Cherry Finish

People place files on my desk everyday. I've had this desk for a little over 1 year and there are little "knicks" all over from the back part of a staple to a paper clip. The slighest movement on the desk of either of these two creates a knick. The edging on the desk is chipping and where the two corners meet is sagging.

Overall I would not recommend this desk. Spend the money on a "real" wood desk.

It's been just about a year since I did battle with my hutch/desk (the hutch assembly was a nightmare) and although I was initially pleased (once together, the ensemble presents itself as a professional and polished work space), I've come to loathe the entire set-up. I went through four chairs - I was convinced my poor choice of chairs was the reason why I routinely fidgeted while trying to work (or play) at my desk, always not quite comfortable. Only recently did I realize the entire desk is simply too low (I'm only 5'6" tall) - the keyboard tray hits me on my thighs as I've yet to find a chair that will lower itself low enough to accommodate the low keyboard tray.

I tried to use the desktop for my keyboard and mouse, but that arrangement left just inches between me and the monitor. Although my keyboard (regular-sized) fits on the tray, there is only a about 5 inches of room for the mouse, thus I'm constantly pushing the keyboard tray up and over the ridge on the left so as to accommodate the mouse movements.

Where the optical mouse lay, the finish has come off to the point the finish is bumpy and is starting to affect the fluidity of the mouse - I've resorted to an old mouse pad (yuck).

I made the mistake of placing the CPU cabinet to my left and the drawers to my right - in a nutshell, unless I buy extension cables for all of my peripherals, the printer and the scanner and the digital pad all have to share space on a tiny portion of the desk - I'm constantly swapping one machine for another (although I have relented and purchased some longer USB cables and such - it still makes me cranky).

The ugly plastic feet have not cracked or buckled as I had initially feared - yet they remain ugly plastic feet.

Storage space - basically it's the two drawers and that's it - the cabinets in the hutch are small and do hold items, but mine remain in some sort of halfway open position most of the time as I'm constantly reaching for this or that - boy, I miss the old "pencil drawer"!

This set-up/set may work well for some people, but for one who uses the computer and/or peripherals on a daily basis and/or has to sit and type for extended periods, well, it's just not efficient, comfortable or durable.

I got the desk and the hutch. You'll need 2 people and 2 days to put this together...mainly because you need to take a break every 45 minutes or so. It's not hard, just follow the easy to read directions. If you want to avoid sore hands, wrists and forearms, you'll want to use a SLOW power scredriver. Don't try to use a drill cause you'll strip the screws, but a powerful cordless screwdriver will make things go quicker...just be careful. Quality is good, and my only two concerns are that the finish may easily scratch, and there is limited ventilation in the computer CPU storage area. If you have a heat generator for a computer, you may need to put some additional vent holes or plan on leaving the door open when in use. This needs to be addressed by Bush. [...]

I recently purchased this desk and absolutely love it. If you purchase it at the time when they are offering the free hutch it is a great buy...I would definitely wait because the hutch is a nice addition. The desk is very large and sturdy. The desk does take quite a while to put together but you can't expect something this substantial to go together quickly so be prepared. I put the entire desk minus putting the hutch on top together by myself but I highly recommend a helper while putting together the larger sections....my back was not very happy with me. All the pieces and hardware are labeled very well and the instructions are pretty good; I have seen better but have certainly seen worse. Be sure you know where you want to place it before fabrication as this is something you will not be moving around from place to place very easily. Overall quality is very good for the money...the only negative I had was the cheap backing came folded in half and there is a large crease evident but other than that it is superb for the money. Highly recommended.

The piece is very sturdy, and does require sometime for assembly. Definitely put it together where you want it to stay as it's too heavy for easy movability.

The only down fall is that the top laminate is very thin and chips and scratches easily.

Solid construction, nice looking desk. A little difficult to assemble for one person, but with some patience it took about 3 hours. For the money it is a great value.
