I wish I had read these reviews sooner, I would never have purchased this all-in-one. I've had two service calls in the first 18 months to my home office because the printing is so bad. I had to replace perfectly good toners the first time and now I have to replace the drum. I have printed a total of 5500 sheets and the claims are false that the drum has a life of 20,000. I will never purchase another Canon product.
I have had the printer that this is used for for almost 8 years and it is a real work horse. I may not always get the 20,000 page yield that is advertised(I usually get 10,000)but you need to remember that the advertised rate does not take into account reality. Using however the real numbers, the yield is comporable to any decent color laser printer being made today and mine is as I said 8 years old and I print an average of 12000 pages + 2000 envelopes + 200-300 brochures per year with presentation docs done at higher resolution. That means higher usage and lower yield.
Something to keep in mind for anyone who isn't getting the yields they expected - the drum is estimated to last 20,000 pages (images). When you print a single color page (letter size) that is 4 images(pages)! Black pages count as one image, color pages are 4 images as they use black, cyan, magenta & yellow. Also, keep in mind that all supplies are rated at 5% coverage which means only 5% of the total page has any toner on it. Most applications are using 20% or more coverage.
A drum is used in combination with the other toners in your machine. It is not a toner itself, but is the developer that allows the toner to stick to the page.

Q:
My canon printer is warning me that I need to replace the C, Y and K ink cartridges. I know Y is yellow and C is Cyan, but what is K? I also have a black ink cartridge. But dont need a black ink cartridge. I cannot find this info anywhere. Does this mean I need a new drum? Thanks

A:
"K" is the black cartridge. I have found that the 4 ink cartridges (Yellow, Cyan, Magenta, and Black) and the Drum Cartridge (the biggest and most expensive one) are costly and need to be changed more frequently than I expected.
