I had previously identified this laser fax as the one I would purchase to replace my inexpensive Sharp ink jet fax, but when it became available at 1/2 its normal price, costing around [$], I jumped at it.So far, I have already used the fax to send and receive scores of faxes, and the laser ink is still almost full. The Sharp model I had soaked up ink so fast that, for example, the fax machine itself cost less than the ink I used. Plus, the ink cartridges for the Sharp model are not redeemable at Staples, so you get nothing in return for the ink cartridges that dry up fast and are empty way too quickly. The fax has an Energy Saver button that keeps its running costs low. It prints out really crisp and clear faxes without having to push any buttons to accept the fax. It has about a 200 page plain paper feed tray, and a rather large storage memory capacity, so from a performance standpoint, I would put it up against any other fax in this price range, including Panasonic or Brother.I do not use it for scanning or copying, so I cannot speak to those functions, but if you are a small business owner who needs a reliable fax that requires basically no maintenance, I suggest you purchase this one.

Just ok - Feeding/Roller issues ruin it

I wouldn't recommend this fax machine-it has wasted time & caused an earful from co-workers. We replaced the first one we had after 4-5 months because papers wouldn't pull half the time. You'd have to give them a push then several pages would go thru at once. The replacement we now have is having the same problem now again after 4-5 months. I troubleshot w/a Canon rep but cannot get the problem fixed. Also, you cannot cancel a fax if it is in between redials. Everything else seem to work ok but the paper feeding issue ruins it for EVERYONE in the office!

This machine gets the job done. We find construction to be someone flimsy and noisy. A disappointment for us is there is no "message" confirming that fax has been sent. There is a flashing light that merely stops when transmission is complete but no confirmation msg how many pages were sent.

I bought this fax/copier/printer when replacing our 1990 fax machine. We have not had any problems and have had the machine for more than 6 months. The fax scans multiple documents for multiple faxes and always prints a report when faxes do not go through. It is efficient and fast. We have not had to replace the starter toner yet and on average we receive about 20 faxes per day. Great buy!
Comments about Canon® FAXPHONE® L170 Laser Fax/Printer:
This is a nice fax machine. It doubles as a printer/copier. It copies the fax papers quickly into memory and then dials the fax number. It's really quite fast compared to my older fax machine. When a fax comes in, the fax will let out a squeel to let you know a fax is coming in. I was close to it when it did it the first time and I just about jumped out of my skin. I would recommend this fax machine for a small office. You get a printer/copier and fax machine rolled up in one package.

Really good fax machine and copier - fast and quiet, no paper jams. Great for a backup printer also. The only con is that the plastic output tray should have been larger - if your printing dozens of pages they may slip off the tray. [...]Well worth the price.
