I bought this camera based on advertising and trust in the Canon brand and reputation. I also reviewed many revues, both pro and con. The cons were few and, in my opinion, did not carry much weight. At least not enough to turn me off of the camera. I very much like the compact size. I use a camera mainly for snapshots around home and in my immediate neighborhood and when traveling, although I have not had a travel opportunity since my purchase, I very much look forward to using it on an upcoming trip. I downgraded the flash on the camera but must note that no built in flash does a great job in all situations.

I've been researching online awhile for a light, easy-to-use camera to take along when I don't want to use my DSLR. I found a great price on the Canon SX50 HS at Staples during a %-off in-store sale. After using the camera in different situations for several weeks, I know I made the right choice. It does well wherever I've used it.

The zoom shots are surprisingly detailed, but would be better on a tripod than handheld, I'm sure. If I can locate the photos I took (handheld) from wide angle to full zoom, I'll include them. None have been retouched, but would be better with increased contrast and a little sharpening. My husband identified a friends home in the zoom shot, miles/towns away from our mountaintop roadside view! I see I can only use 2 photos which won't show what I wanted, but maybe will give some insight.

The videos of family and wildlife have been very good...actually better than I expected. The button placement is handy to use. Low-light shooting with my semi-pro DSLR is disappointing so the Canon SX50 surprised me no end. Late one night, I was sitting in front of the computer reading the online manual, all lights off so as not to bother anyone. I took several room snapshots for testing (on P or Auto setting) with only the light from the pc. So much better than my DSLR shots in low light! Really surprised at how much of the room showed brightly and also at the lack of noise in the photos. When I bought the camera, I didn't expect it to come anywhere close to the image quality from my expensive DSLR. I'm honestly surprised and pleased with the Canon SX50.

The one downside is the battery life. It is shorter than I am used to on my other camera, but the battery is easy to charge and carrying a spare can solve that problem. Canon lists 315-335 shots and +-1hr.15min. for video...depending on whether you use the viewfinder or screen. Most of the time that is more than enough for my daily usage.

Several things I like about the Canon is that it has a small viewfinder which I'm used to, an articulating/flip over screen for easy low and high shots, and that it shoots RAW and macro. I'm impressed with this camera and that's saying a lot as I am nitpicky about image quality. I will learn more about it as time goes by, but hopefully this will help someone decide if this is the camera they want.

Wanting to stay in the digital class I reviewed many high end long zoom digitals. It didn't take long to find the canon SX50 and SX40. Compared to some other high zoom cameras the Canon had the better picture quality at the highest zoom. I picked the SX50 because it had the extra 5x zoom than the SX40. I had the SX40 and sold it. If I had to do it over I would have kept the SX40 only because it also had an excellent rating and the zoom was certainly enough for what ever I would have needed. If you don't have the money to get into the DSLR-EOS cameras then the SX50 and SX40 are it.
