I am a Computer Science student and use this calculator in Linear Algebra, Discreet Math, Calculus (not as good as a graphing calculator for calc), and Number Systems (does conversions between base 16, 10, 8, and 2). It was particularly useful in Linear Algebra for all of its mtrix operations, and equation solver. What I like most about it is the "natural textbook display" that lets me set up equations the same way that I do on paper and that helps me eliminate careless errors with parentheses that I would normally use on my graphing calculator. My only complaint is after I set up an equation and I want to go back and edit it, the "left" and "right" buttons move the cursor slowly. However, it is an AMAZING calculator, especially for the price.

I have used Casio calculators for many years and prefer them over TI and HP. I gave this one 3 stars because the display is not easily readable in a desk top lighting situation. Get it away from the light even 10" and you either can not read the display or you will struggle. They used a similar display on their first graphing calculator many years ago (own it) and it had the same poor qualities. I am at a loss to understand why they used it again. Still, I would recommend it for anyone doing science (I use it for chemistry), math or even computer software (hex, octal, etc., conversions). It has features I have not learned how to use that I'm sure I will find useful, like a table of scientific constants.

Im writing this review in response to a review that I read before I bought it......I almost didnt buy this because some people said it will not do the sq. root of 2, it just displays what you typed in. Well, it infact does do all sq.roots. Those people were right to some extent, if you type in the sq.root of 2, it will display what you typed in because there is no exact sq.rt. of 2. This gives the illusion that the calculator is wrong. However, if you then press the button just above the red "DEL" button, the one with the "S~D" on it it will display 1.414213562, which is the answer you are looking for. This calculator WILL DO everything you need it to do! My two choises were between this model and one from TexInst., Im glad I went with my gut feeling and bought this one. This calc. has BOTH solar and battery at the same time, the TexInst. model only had solar, and many reviewers said there was an issue when they were in a dimmly lit classroom etc. With the Casio, you will never have to worry about that! Now, the instructions are in the form of a big fold out piece of paper and could be a little more user friendly, but nothing is perfect; right? Overall, this is an awsome calculator and will do everything a calc. should do, and in my oppinion you cant go wrong buying it.
