This unit is used to protect my computer, monitor, DSL modem and wi-fi router. It is providing smooth power to my load of about 120 to 130 watts. Do not be misled by the "up to 70 minutes" as indicated on the packaging nor by the indication of 8 outlets (see below). With normal use with desk computer, monitor and modem equipment, expect only 5 to 18 minutes maximum of battery backup power, depending on the load required for your equipment. My load of 120 to 130 watts (Dell desk computer and 19" LCD wide screen monitor), should provide me with 16 to 18 minutes of back up. However, adequate time will be provided by the unit to allow ample opportunity to properly shut down the computer. The spacing of some of the power outlets to accomdate AC adapters is a very good design feature. This unit will provide 4 outlets for battery backup and surge protection; and 4 additional outlets for surge protection only, for a total of 8 power outlets. This model also provides full data line protection and noise filtering. It mounts easily on a wall or sits out of the way on the floor. It is very easy to set up and the software provides current status, load, battery back up time, and summary reports on the monitor screen, available by clicking an icon on the tool bar.

I purchased the 685VA because I already have 2 other CyberPower UPSs which have proven quite dependable for several years. I use them for stationary setups with my 3 laptops when I'm at home and not traveling, and I now use one to power my Ethernet routers. We are located in an area where we experience occasional power outages and the battery backup is really essential. I've purchased a couplle other brands of UPS and found them less reliable than CyberPower's excellent product.
Very easy to set up, and programming is easy to understand. Do note, however, the unit is very heavy, and may take up a little more room than necessary.
Overall, a perfect purchase for my machine. I have a Tower PC (500W PSU), 2 19' LCD monitors, and an external HD, and the unit gives me about 11 minutes worth of power... which is plenty for saving a shutting down safely.
Use for my DVR. Short one-second power glitches cause my DVR to stop recording shows and reboot (which takes 5 minutes or more). And that really stinks when I'm watching a show, and boom I miss 5 minutes or more... This product is the cure! I have another Cyberpower with slightly smaller capacity that has been working great on my computer for 4 years now. Note that while all the outlets have surge protection, only the 'battery backup' outlets have battery backup. On this model you shouldn't exceed 390 watts in the battery backup outlets. I plug the DVR into a battery backup outlet, since it says 400 watts on the back, and the TV, DVD, VCR, and stereo go into non-battery-backup outlets. Those other outlets are probably OK up to the usual 1500 watts but I didn't check the manual on that. Get this product if you have power glitch troubles!
I apologize, Staples does not regularly stock the battery for this Surge protector. We may be able to source the item for you. For more information call (800) 333-3330.
