I'm sort of an old-timer when it comes to laser printers, my first being a rather large unit from Xerox back in the mid 80's. Since then I've used several models from HP and even a couple of different color lasers. All of these were professional office machines costing $ Thousands.

For personal use, I've had four different inkjets from two different popular manufacturers. Nice, but as everyone knows, the cost of new ink cartridges usually add up to more than what the initial printer costs. Not a desirable trait, in my honest opinion.

This is especially true considering my usage, as I use more ink cleaning the nozzles than I actually do for my fairly rare printing needs! So, the answer for me is a laser printer. No nozzles to clog, ink to dry out, etc.

So, after a bit of research (and memory) I decided that a mono laser (simply "black") would be the best solution to most of my printing needs. I mostly print stuff from the Internet, written documents, line illustrations, and the occasional coupon offer.

The Dell 1160W Wireless proved to be just right for my purposes. It's dimensionally quite compact, lightweight, and considerably faster than any inkjet that I've ever used. The wireless feature works flawlessly, even though it is two floors from my router. (My router is in the second floor library, while my office is located in the basement.)

The old laser printers that I've used were sort of energy hogs, and they took a long time to warm up; so much so that it was preferable to just leave them on all the time. Not so with this little Dell, it comes online within the minute.

The controls are very simple, just a single power switch. There is a multi-color LED to indicate status. The paper tray hold 150 sheet of letter-sized paper and it is adjustable to take smaller sheets, envelopes, labels, etc.

The output tray is on the top, hinged to the cover, and though a single sheet or two can be printed with the tray closed, you should open it for multiple pages. Simple process and there's even a flip-out support extension.

Other than keeping the printer clean, there really is no maintenance. Simple lift up the top cover to expose the rollers and laser cartridge. A new laser cartridge will printer an average of 1,500 sheets at a cost of about four -cents a sheet. The unit comes with an "intro" cartridge, good for about 750 sheets. The cartridge is very easy to install or remove, with metal guides at both left and right sides of the printer in which the cartridge simply slides into. That feature looks pretty durable to me, and in practice makes cartridge change really easy.

Bottom line is that this was one of the best buys I've ever made. I've only had it about two weeks, but setup was very easy. (Well, actually I had to call Dell to handle the Windows 8.1 which brand new to me. But, the tech took control and within just a couple of minutes everything was perfect.

Print Quality? Well, I've been in the graphics business for more than four decades, and I was very pleased. The line and font reproduction quality is very good with well defined edges. Even printing half-tone images is fairly decent, though laser printers aren't really designed with for that purpose. There were no gaps, line misses, or any of the flaws that I've found in too many ink-jets. The 1160W lived up to the quality that I've come to expect from past laser printer experience.

Bottom line is that this is a great little printer for the home or small office. It will print quickly and quietly, up to 20 ppm with very good quality.

I have never purchased such a poorly designed product in both terms of design and software. The paper gets damaged by the guides during eject and the installation software/manual leave much to be desired... and by that I mean decent instructions. I consider myself a computer expert and installing and getting the printer to work and the firmware updated has been a daunting task even when using a Dell PC. Never another Dell printer... NEVER!

        Excessive performance problems

Comments about Dell™ 1160W Wireless Mono Laser Printer:

The good: price, size, adequate print speed and quality.

        The bad:

Wireless -- Difficult wifi to set up, even with utility cd, and is unreliable even once set; bluetooth is even less reliable. I finally go fed up with the repeated lost wireless connections and have connected via the USB cable & port.

Paper handling -- paper jams continually (about 1-in-4 jobs), and for no apparent reason); front-and-back printing (manual) fouls even more frequently, and sequencing properly after clearing an error -- fuggedaboudit; larger print jobs, say 25+ pages have NEVER completed without jam/error.

Controls -- the two multi-purpose buttons -- useless.

I like the printer it seems to be great. works great with my wife laptop running windows 7. it's not as friendly with my computer running windows 8.1. as long as I keep it hooked up with a usb cable I don't have a problem, butt if I set it up for wireless I keep losing connection with the printer. don't know if the problem is with me or with windows 8.1

Some files printed correctly, but others did not. The latter were
Word files that a screenshot inserted. I returned the printer for full credit. Info stated compatible versions of Windows: older, did not include 8.1.

Comments about Dell™ 1160W Wireless Mono Laser Printer:

Bought this printer when I saw it on sale. Wife is taking online courses, and prints a lot of text-only material. Printer is amazingly fast, and isn't always complaining that a color cartridge is empty! Hooked up to our home network with no problems & all of our laptops can access it. Ordered a cartridge right away, because I know that most printers come with less than full-capacity
