We bought this printer about 2 years ago on clearance (yet somehow they carry it again). It was to replace an older, slower dot matrix printer. We needed something to do multipart forms for our warehouse so we could print through two pieces of paper. This is used when we pick orders so we write on one sheet and it goes through to the second. This printer is light years faster than our old printer. It's very reliable and we hardly had any problems during the 2+ years we've owned it, until recently it keeps jamming constantly.I think that track record is pretty decent for a printer we leave on 24 hours a day and is in a warehouse enviorment which is a little dusty. It's held up for quite some time. The only thing we've done occasionally is blow air into it to get any little pieces of dust or paper out.The printer is very fast. I can print a whole 8.5" x 11" page in about 30 seconds when setting the mode to HSD. Our old printer would probably have taken about 5 minutes a page! The printer itself has a manufacturer's warranty of 3 years, which I think is very good. I'm going to call in now and try to get service. My only real gripe is that their tech support sounds like it's based in India. I didn't really care for them, but they did go through some basic troubleshooting before they told me to call a local service center under warranty. I had to keep repeating myself on the phone because the call seems kind of "lagged" probably because the people are so far away.I'd have rated it a 5 but I had a few minor snags:- It not started jamming recently. I'm sure it can easily be fixed, though.- Being that it jammed, I was going to try a different paper feed path. It has 3: rear, bottom, and front. I can't figure out how to get bottom working, even though I read the manual. The printer was missing parts when we initially bought it, so we can't even try the front feed. This printer is an excellent value for the price ([$]and I still think it's an excellent value for what it currently sells for on Staples [$] The ribbons are cheap and last a long time.

We own two of these. They jam ocasionally and even worse they don't print the text correctly all the time. Often the top and bottom half of letters are seperated or the letters are vertically squished.

I sent one in for repair on the spacing issue. They could not find anything wrong. I have replaced one with a direct thermal printer and I will probably be replacing the other with a different dot matrix.

I don't have much experience with dot matrix printers but I am not impressed. The speed was great but it doesn't really matter if it doesn't print right.

FX-890 Impact Printer

By Anonymous

from Boulder, CO

Comments about Epson® FX-890 Dot Matrix Printer:

These printers are worthless. My company bought the first one in July 2010, the Tear Off/Bin button stopped working after 13 months of use. We purchased 2 brand new printer of the same model recently, on both new printers the same button did not work. This is substandard quality on all three printers. I will not purchase another Epson dot matrix printer.

Comments about Epson® FX-890 Dot Matrix Printer:

THE FX-890 IS A GOOD PRICE, EASY TO SET UP, AND PRINTS VERY QUICKLY. I USE IT FOR INSURANCE FORMS 1500'S AND HAVE NO PROBLEM. MY ONLY CONCERN IS I CANNOT GET IT TO PRINT DARK ENOUGH. I HAVE PUT IN A NEW RIBBON AND SAME PROBLEM.

I'm a little confused. 2 people have asked if this printer is compatible with Windows 7--one answer (from 2012) says no, Staples doesn't carry any dot matrix printers that work with Windows 7. The other (from 2011) says yes, this particular printer works with Windows 7. Which is it? Thanks!

Do you know if this one will or any of the others. I do not want to order it & then find out it will not work with 64-bit win7.

what is difference between a 9 pin and a 24 pin
          Asked on 10/6/2009 by Anonymous

          1 answer

          • A:

            print speed and print quality.

9 pin - faster speed, lower quality
24 pin - slower speed, better quality

Neither come close to rivaling a laser or inkjet printer, dot matrix today is used for multipart forms and niche applications.
