Epson Perfection V33 Flatbed Scanner

The biggest drawback is that you can only scan the entire flatbed, save the file (default name and location) and then crop the resulting file in another program. The scanning software closes after every scan and must be opened to do the next page of a book, etc. I did install the ArcSoft MediaImpression 2 file viewer but found it to be VERY large, slow and cumbersome so I removed it. I haven't tried the character recognition or the Scan-n-Stich software but if they work as described they will be a very nice programs. Overall, a good basic scanner with some quirks.

No Linux driver available from Epson. You can get their Image Scan! for Linux software.

It installs and lets you scan. I miss the features of the Linux scanning software that is available. For example, the Image Scan! for Linux always saves to your home folder. If you want to store in another folder, you have to click-navigate to that folder for EACH scan. Options are limited, compared to the usual Linux scanning software.

Also, after installing Image Scan! for Linux, I now have Linux boot errors. The user groups talk about a patch, but I am reluctant to try that yet. My Linux PC worked fine before the Epson software.

The cords in the front corner are an irritant, but I can live with that.

Other than the poor Linux support losing two stars, it is a decent scanner.

My original scanner is great for 8 1/2 x 11, but I'd painted my book illustrations on standard art tablet canvas sheets, which are 9x12. It was cheaper to buy what I thought was a significantly larger scanner than to buy a flash drive and have each page scanned at the Copy&Print desk. Not only does the 9x12 paper not fit flat, but 1/4-1/2 inch per side doesn't appear in the scan--I have to mount each page on a 10x13 envelope to get the full picture. The Scan-n-Stitch feature is very cool, as long as margins are factored in to the original artwork.

This is a good basic scanner. Loaded the software, plugged in the scanner and was scanning in a few minutes. Quality of the scans appear to be better that the old HP that I had. Have not tweaked the scanner settings yet, but so far, the general quality of the scans has been good.

One of the reviews seemed to indicate that this scanner only scans a full page at a time and will not allow the user to select the area to scan. Meaning that if you are scanning anything smaller than 8.5x11 you must crop each image after scanning. Is this correct?

My scanner worked great for several months. Now, for some reason, when I scan a document, it gives me a screen that wants me to buy ABBYY Fineprint reader. If I choose not to do so, it will not save the scanned document. I can still save as a JPEG but not as a PDF file. Any idea why this is happening?

I'm having to replace my old Scanjet 4C and, along with the newer Scanjets, am looking at this scanner, the Epson Perfection V300 and the V500, as well as the Canon LIDE210. Most of my scanning is color graphics and art, black and white line art, and photos. My OS is Windows XP Professional, and the scanning program I use, and would like to continue to use, is Paperport. Based on all of that, what scanner would you recommend? Thanks.
