I purchased the v330 two weeks ago and have been putting it through the paces. Chiefly, I wanted the cheapest scanner that would be able to scan film (slides/film negatives) and come with bundled OCR software for making PDFs. I am in the process of digitizing old family photos (all our photo albums--containing B&W and color prints, negatives, and positives) and scanning in all my old university notebooks as PDFs so I can recycle the hardcopies.

I have been extremely satisfied with the overall performance of the v330. Greyscale (300dpi) image acquisition of A4-sized paper is around 8 seconds/page or so; the same thing in color takes about 15 seconds. Some color correction is needed when scanning in color slides and film negatives (which, when scanned, take around 15 seconds per slide @ 600dpi), but that's about what I would expect from a cheaper flatbed scanner. Greyscale images are stunning. I also tried scanning color from printed material (magazine) and was fairly impressed with the results.

Setup and software installation is easy. Comes with import capability for Photoshop, though the standalone bundled acquisition software offers functions that would satisfy users ranging from novice to advanced in terms of ease of use and tweaking the preview output prior to scanning.

Bottom line: I might not necessarily recommend this scanner to professionals or anyone who needs extremely high accuracy in reproducing color with films (and note the v330 does not support films larger than 35mm), but as a general-purpose workhorse for home or office, I would happily recommend it.

Cons:
-----

As of yet, I have only two complaints concerning the bundled software as opposed to the scanner itself.

1. When one of the scanner buttons is pressed ("PDF", for example), in WinXP, the appropriate software will launch instantly and automatically. In Windows 7, however, a dialog box will appear and prompt the user to select a program manually. This extra step may confuse novice users and slows down the scanning process when doing batch jobs.

2. Although the bundled OCR/PDF creation software (ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint) does a reasonable job (not 100% accurate, but in my experience OCR is seldom that way), I have had trouble creating longer (50+ page) PDFs. After discussing the matter with ABBYY's tech support and following their advice, I have been successful at creating longer PDFs. Note that if you intend to scan in dozens of pages and have them all converted to PDF, under the "one-touch" PDF creation mode, if an error occurs during the conversion process (after you've scanned everything), you must re-scan all files. If you acquire images using SprintReader itself, if any error occurs, you will _not_ lose all your work and are free to either save the image files individually or try re-converting to PDF.

I have had this unit for 2 days and will be returning it today! First off, Its big... Bigger than I thought it would be. not that thats bad, just thought it was worth mentioning. I 1st hooked it up to my desktop (older dell xp)and it would not work at all due to a usb power surge error. I then connected it to my new Dell M6500 (a really nice new laptop). I planned to scan slides with this scanner and still have a usable device when all the slides were completed. It worked for about an hour or 2 then an error message saying there was no communication from the scanner. I deleted and reinstalled the drivers and it worked for another hour or 2! I did this several times with the same results (I'm pretty sure thats the definition of insanity) Also, every 3rd or 4th time I would get an additional error stating that there was a usb power surge and I need to remove the connector from the port. Like I said I am retuning this to Staples today! In the hours I was able to use this scanner, I liked it. To many problems though... more time spent uninstalling, reloading, rebooting, screaming...

Comments about Epson Perfection V330 Photo Scanner:

I purchased the scanner to begin a project with the Historical Society. I have just started scanning and believe the Epson will meet all my needs.

It was difficult setting up and it seems more involved getting each photo into a file, etc. That aspect may improve as I get used to the steps.

Overall,I am very pleased with the scanner and believe it will serve me well through a mountain of photos, documents and other items.

Comments about Epson Perfection V330 Photo Scanner:

I have used two HP scanners and recently purchased the Epson V330. Love the size of the scanner (much smaller than the HPs), the quality of the scans and the ease of use. My ONLY complaint is the instructions for setting up the scanner. They are a little vague in the steps to follow. I purchased this to scan old slides and am amazed at the ease and the quality of the pics when I scanned 40 year old slides. Would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a scanner.
