For mainly scanning hundreds of larger negatives from my grandfather and parents stored negatives that I inherited since they have past away. Organizing and labeling all these negatives as well as photos on external storage.I already had an Epson negative scanner but I needed the larger format this V500 has for successful scanning. My previous Epson scanner is user friendly and this is why I bought this Epson Perfection V500.The price was affordable, user friendly features, good results. It is everything I was looking for.I am being able to view photos from these negatives I have never seen before.Prior to the digital age you would turn in film to be developed, order 2 sets of prints possibly and stash the negatives aways in boxes or drawers. The majority of my Grandfather's negatives are 2 1/2" X 4 1/2" and most of them in wonderful condition. Now I can preserve them digitally and be able to distribute the photos via a disc to family members.

This scanner is about equal to others in its class. However, its limied by the software Epson provides. You need to purchase 3rd party software, such as Vuescan to actually scan at 6400 dpi. The ADF is limied to one-sided scanning and there are no provisions in software for flip pages over and scan the other side. Epson won't even answer questions on this issue. The film holder will not hold film strips flat. You need a special glass film holder to use this capablity.

    Great scanner

    By dmo

Comments about Epson Perfection® V500 Photo Flatbed Scanner:

I've had it for a while now and couldn't be happier. Originally bought it to scan photos, which it does a great job of doing, but I also use it a lot for scanning to PDF files. My copier has a scanner, but I prefer Epson Perfection V500 so much more. Easy to set up, easy to use, fits my needs. For the price, a very good scanner.

    35mm Positive transfers to digital

    By Thrconsultant

    from San Francisco

Comments about Epson Perfection® V500 Photo Flatbed Scanner:

I purchased my V500 scanner as a device specifically for transferring 35mm slides to jpgs. With very little learning time, I've transferred hundreds of slides - a family album - with great ease and terrific results. This is a quick, high resolution and cost-effective product. I could not be happier! A great resource for creating power-point "photo' albums!

    Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

    By AllScannedOut

    from Akron, Ohio

Comments about Epson Perfection® V500 Photo Flatbed Scanner:

The scanner and it's operation seemed to be good. However, the software appears to be wanting. After about a year of use, when I attempt to open "Epson Scan" I get an error message "Epson Scan has stopped working." This seems to nullify the repair, correction, and editing functionality of the scanner.

I have 35mm negatives, slide film and 4x5 negatives and chrome will this machine do all this? Is this wireless? is there one that is wireless and will scan all my work specified?
Asked on 5/9/2013 by Corinee from MA

      1 answer

      • A:

The Epson Perfection V500 Photo Flatbed Scanner will scan all the items you desire to scan, but it's a USB connection. There is not a wireless flatbed scanner that meets all you needs.

    • Q:

Will this V500 scan multiple photos at once and then save them to individual files and NOT to one file with several photos in it??? Since it scans slides (plural) and film strips (several photos), I would hope it saves them to individual files. I have MANY photos and don't mind if they are saved with a "generic" name or number as I can go back and rename them, but having to later separate 2, 3 or 4 photos from one file would be a major pain.

This V500 is capable of scanning multiple photo's at once.

    • Q:

How fast will it scan documents? (How many seconds per page for color and black and white?)
      Asked on 10/18/2012 by Fred

      1 answer

      • A:

The amount of time to scan a document depends on the number of lines in the document, color documents have the most lines of resolution. The scanning speeds of the Epson Perfection V500 Photo Flatbed Scanner are: (1) High speed mode: 4800 dpi; (2) Color: 16.98 msec / line; and (3) Monochrome (black & white): 16.98 msec / line.

I can't access the reviews on the web page. I click on reviews and nothing happens? Also I want to know if the scanner can do 3D objects, or scan books. Also I can find the accessory that lets you scan multiple pages. Thank you

Asked on 5/11/2012 by Doc from San Leandro, CA

      1 answer

      • A:

There aren't any reviews to click on, that is why you can not see them. This scanner can scan anything that you can place on top of it although it might lose the 3D effect when scanning. The accessory is not available on the website at this time, check back later.

I am trying to decide between Epson V500 and V330. I know that the higher resolution will make clearer prints, but the software is different in each one. Which software would be best for scanning and improving 35mm negatives and old prints.

The software included with the v500 scanner, is the Adobe Photoshop Elements. This is a very popular software among folks who archieve and prep old photos.

Answered on 3/14/2012 by Darlene S from Staples
      • A:

One of the best ways to improve negatives is to use software like Photoshop, so the program would be good for 35mm negatives.

The main system requirements are: Windows Vista/XP/Me/2000; Mac OS X, 128MB RAM or higher. Epson does indicate that this scanner will work with Windows 7, However, the software included may need additional updates to work with windows 7 64 bit and 32 bit.
