ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS PHOTO PRINTER

As a computer professional, I've been taking digital photos since 1995, and share with friends via glossy prints. Compared to every prior printer, here is what I love about the Epson R2000. The prints are spectacular: vibrant color, true skintones, lovely finish. And the reliability of paper feed and ease of changing between paper sizes a delight.

I bought this printer for graphic printing, not for photos, and I print on matte paper, so I don't need the gloss optimizer, but there isn't any way for me to opt out of using that, as far as I can tell. My print settings and printer dialogue box do not look like the one in the booklet and that option isn't given. As a result, I used up all the gloss optimizer in a very short time -- when all the inks were still at about 90% capacity -- and then could not print anymore because that cartridge was empty. This is a pain when I'm trying to get cards printed for an upcoming craft show and I don't need them to be glossy anyway. I have also been unable to get the colors to come true. I'm printing from Adobe Illustrator, and I tried various options for the color management, but none of them look very good, and the blacks in my black line drawings come out gray. Ironically, I have none of these troubles with my cheaper Epson printer, the Workforce 610, nor with my old PhotoStylus 1280, so I assumed I would be as happy with this printer as I have been with those. The Workforce printer can't handle heavy card stock, and even with the lighter card stock, which it will print on, I end up having to clean the printer heads often to keep the print quality up. I had thought that this being a photo printer and more heavy duty, it would give me consistently better print quality, but it's not working out that way. I know Epson wants me to use their papers, but I've never had to resort to that before, and a printer that is so fussy it won't print decently on generic paper is too fussy for me.

GREAT PRINTER - POOR SOFTWARE

I BURN UP A LOT OF PRINTERS AND INK AND, I HAVE PURCHASED PRINTERS FROM $200 UP TO $8,500. THIS PRINTER REALLY DOES A NICE JOB WITH COLOR AND QUALITY OF PRINT. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE SOFTWARE DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU SELECT "HIGHEST QUALITY" THE PAPER DEFAULTS TO AM A10 SIZE. IF YOU CHANGE THE SIZE THEN THE QUALITY FLIPS BACK TO STANDARD. ALSO THERE IS LITTLE EXPLANATION FOR DIFFERENT PRINT MODES. I FOUND THE MOST USEFUL INFORMATION ON "RED RIVER'S" PAPER SITE WHICH WAS WAY, WAY BETTER THAN WHAT IS ON EPSON SITE. SEEMS LIKE FOR THE EVERYDAY PERSON WANTING TO JUST PRINT A PIC, SOFTWARE IS FINE. FOR SOMEBODY THAT USE'S PS5, LR, AND SEVERAL OTHER HIGH END SOFTWARE PACKAGES TO GET THE PIC PERFECT, THE PRINTER SOFTWARE SHOULD BE JUST A LITTLE BIT HIGHER END OR AT LEAST OFFER AN AD-ON PRINTER PACKAGE.

Printing technology excellent....but uses up ink too rapidly...and ink is costly. Operating instructions very inadequate...needs too much guess work. All Instructions should be clear and complete and consequently needs rewriting.

Had a Epson960 for years, and when it quit after years of great service I knew I wanted another Epson. After searching I found the r2000 at a great price, and decided to purchase it. I received it, and set it up, and the first print off was BEAUTIFUL !! But if you have a iMAC with OS X Lion, you will not have a disk to do the installation. You will have to go to the Epson Support Site, and follow the instructions. Also if you want to use the WI-FI, you will need your routers SECURITY KEY. If its like mine it will have approx. 64 characters that are case sensitive. Without that KEY you will not be able to use the WI-FI function. I am using a Apple Time Capsule as my router, and back-up. With the Mac the KEY can be found in the "AIRPORT UTILITY" It will be just below your NetWork Name. Also make sure that you have installed the "8.60 Driver. Without the 8.60 Driver you will not have all the functions of the printer. I have had other Epson printers, and scanners, and have never had a problem. Also the support is always the best !! I highly recommend this printer, and you should consider Epson when replacing any of your other devices.

"I've been taking photographs for over 30 years now, and I have used Epson printers for as long as I can remember. I have always wanted to purchase a "large format" printer, but could never decide exactly which one to purchase. I recently read an article in Shutterbug magazine profiling the Epson R2000. I started to laugh when it hit me that the printer I was still using was an Epson â€�R200". I've had this printer for longer than I care to remember, and it still performed amazing! The review gave the R2000 excellent results, and it stated that Epson was offering a $150.00 rebate....I figured now would be a great opportunity to upgrade from a printer that I purchased back when Moses was a cub scout; so I went to the B&H web-site and read more reviews, and almost 100% of them were positive. The price of the printer was not too bad, however I noticed that the rebate was now $100.00, instead of $150.00 as the article in Shutterbug had stated. Also, a few of the reviews commented on the fact that the $150.00 rebate was an incentive for them to purchase the printer. I'm not sure when, or why Epson decided to lower the rebate, but went ahead and purchased the printer anyway. A few days later it arrived and I "slid" the box into my house, (the box could have contained a small person). Epson did a pretty good job of packing the printer in the box, because it took me longer to unpack it and remove the "safety tape", than it did to install the software and set the printer up to use! Anyway, The installation process was a breeze, as I opted to install the printer for use with a USB, instead of Wi-Fi. After installing the 8 ink cartridges, and allowing them to charge for about 4 minutes, I printed a test page (which is only text), and everything looked good. I then printed several 8x10's and they looked amazing! I didn't have to do any tinkering with print profiles due to the fact that I was using Epson Premium Plus photo paper (5 star), and the drop down box allowed me to just check the one I was using. The one thing I did notice, is that you cannot print a borderless 8-1/2 x 11 print. (I can do this this with my other two printers) The printer apparently defaults to an 8x10 photo, even though I was printing on an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of photo paper. The manual stated that you can however print borderless photos on 11x14, and 13x19 sheets. Also, I would assume that if you used other papers from other manufacturers, you could download the print profile for that type of paper. At the time I tested the printer, I did not have any large format paper to test because I had not yet determined which type would best suit my needs. However, if the 8x10's are of any consequence, it shouldn't be a problem. The printer has a top feeder, and a rear feeder (for thick art board, etc) and it also handles roll paper, and will print panoramas up to 13"x44". It will also print to CD and DVD printable media. All in all, I am very satisfied with both the quality of the printer, and the ease of setting it up. I would recommend this printer to anyone that would occasionally like to "impress" their friends and family with a huge photo and not have to upload the file to a website, and wait a week to receive it. -Rick B Phenix City, Alabama"

Another great printer

I have two Epson R1800 printers, one of which is completely worn out from use. The R2000 is a replacement and will be used exclusively for printing high quality photos, mostly 8-1/2 x 11 size, until I wear out the second R1800 with other work. I have printed identical photos on both printers and I can see no difference between the prints. The R2000 is slower since I used the new feature of selecting between speed and quality, and I chose quality as more important than speed. I look forward to printing on canvas media (available from Epson) since Epson printers and inks are used for the highest quality giclee prints and I expect similar performance. (The best giclee printers use an enhanced ink sysem with a couple softer color tones added to the CYMK palette.) The R2000 should give enhanced flesh tones because of the extra orange and red cartridges beyond the usual CYMK palette. I've tried it for a photo of a hummingbird with red/orange plumage and doubt that I could ever get better color. The R2000 printer seems to be the best for professional quality color photos. Ink is expensive for both printers, but the R2000 cartridges are larger capacity for not much increase in price. The print options are enhanced on the R2000, several of which are useful and a few I don't intend using, such as some automatic "color corrections". The media handling options and quality are also improved. I haven't found any downside yet. If you are satisfied with run of the mill product, someone else's run of the mill printer may cost less, but if you need quality the R2000 is the way to go.

Installation was a snap. I love having wireless built in since this printer is huge and I didn't have space near my PC. Prints are beautiful and look exactly like what you see on your monitor (as long as you calibrate your monitor). For all you Lightroom users make sure you set the color management profile to "Managed by Printer".
