After much research online and reading reviews I ordered the nuvi 52LM. I wanted the lifetime maps but the traffic alerts on the more expensive models.
I bought this new 52LM in Staple Store i took it out for a spin locally to addresses I knew in the area and testing the POI. It worked like a charm and found all places without a hitch. Since it's setup for fastest route by default it wants to stick to major roads. I knew some shortcuts so purposely went a different way a few times. It recalculated quickly and it was refreshing not to hear that annoyed female voice saying "recalculating". It just did it and quickly. In the next few days I'll try it on a longer trip out of the area.
My one complaint, and one that's shared by many, is that there was no manual in the box. Only a quick setup sheet of paper and a thick safety & product information booklet in about 20 languages. They could have included a user manual about the same size in that box. Finding a manual at the Garmin site online was pretty easy.
One new feature this unit has that my old one didn't is that when you are on major roads, next to your speed, it shows a little speed limit sign for the road you are on. When your speed exceeds the speed limit the speed numbers change from black to dark red. Might save you a ticket if you are on unfamiliar roads and haven't seen a speed limit sign in a while

This GPS, while it looks good from the specs & box, has several design shortcomings.

The box says that it supports XP, Vista, and 7 or OSX. Given this, I have to use my old laptop because every recent machine I have has had Ubuntu Linux put on it. (You never know how bad windows is until you don't have to use it anymore.) I figured that since OSX is supported, that it'd 'just work' on LInux since OSX is based on BSD Unix. Unfortunately, this is not the case, even though the update process simply downloads a file and copies it to the GPS, which shows up on the system as a USB Mass Storage Device. (For the non-technical people reading this, it's about the same difficulty as downloading a file from the internet onto a USB flash drive.)

The download on Garmin's site lists the minimum required OS as Vista - no support for XP. I finally got it installed by using a few tricks I know and updated it to the latest maps. Gave it a test run by going to a buddy's for a meeting - I'm glad I did!

Dave lives out in the country. He has a city mailing address though. I learned by this that technically, he lives in the neighboring village. The GPS wasn't smart enough to look for an address match half a mile outside the city and instead gave me absolute jibberish for destination options.

Calling support was an exercise in frustration. After over half an hour, the guy told me that my friend lives in the village rather than the city. (Strange that google maps finds his address no problem when entered in the city, as does the post office...) When I expressed frustration at the lack of OS support, he told me that they don't want to update the box from when the GPS was first released. He also told me flat out that the updates will probably work with XP for 'a while yet', but that they'll discontinue it at some point, whenever the usage numbers get too low for them to 'bother with'. Same sentiments regarding Linux support - I guess 60 million PCs running an OS isn't enough for Garmin to care about.

While researching options to make it work with Linux, I learned that there are options out there to install 3rd party maps onto the GPS. However, the support guy told me that if I overwrite the wrong file on the GPS, it will destroy it. When I mentioned that I'd taken a backup of the file system in case something bad did happen in the future, he told me that a lot of the areas cannot be written to more than once. In short, if a file is corrupted, you're out of luck. They do this 'to prevent people from pirating the software'. This makes 0 sense as one can copy the software from the device as much as you want - you just can't fix yourself it if something goes wrong. To me, this is nothing but a blatant way to prevent knowledgeable people from repairing their own devices.

Instead of taking me from road A to road B to road C to his house, it was trying to divert me through small towns and down side-streets. No idea how long it would've taken me to get there how it wanted me to go because I was afraid of getting lost, even though I knew the way.

The battery was charged for 12 hours after I got the device. It gave a low battery warning about 20 minutes after the first time I used it, which means that you basically have to have it connected to your car battery all the time.

The map did not follow my vehicle as I was driving like other GPS units I've seen, instead displaying the map at the first turn I took. It was like this for many miles until I turned the thing off out of frustration & disgust. It knew where I was from the directions it kept trying to give me, but the display just didn't update.

I'm very thankful that I tried this out when I did and did not wait until I needed it for a trip. My local Staples store couldn't have been nicer about my returning it.

This is the first negative review I've written for a long time. Part of it is probably due to the fact that I've badly wanted a GPS for a very long time and that this unit was such a monumental disappointment.

Comments about Garmin nuvi 52 LM GPS:

This is the first Garmin GPS I have owned or used. So far it is working great. It takes a little getting used to having to change the state before entering the name of a city for a new destination. With my previous GPS, I just entered the city and had choices of that name in various states. I do like the feature that you can search points of interest close to locations other than the one where you are currently located. One thing I do not like, (or at least I have not figured out a way to do it) is favorites are listed according to their distance from your current location and not in alphabetical order.

Comments about Garmin nuvi 52 LM GPS:

I got tired of the old Garmin that did not have the updates. It had me drive onto water. Thanks to Staples it was affordable. The screen is bigger, which is good. I cannot use the mount but that is okay. I wish that I could have the one with that I can talk to but I have friends talk to theirs and it gets confused.
