While it is great to have an expiration date so that I know I am buying a fresh product, I found that my printer (HP INKJET 1100) will not print once the cartridge has expired - even if it is still full! So, when I was printing a lot of greeting cards I used the ink fast enough, but I have not done much printing this year and my cartridge expired while still almost 50% full.

HP makes sure they get their money. The cartridge will expire before you can use it up forcing you to buy more when you do not need it. There is a little chip on these that shuts it down even when nothing is wrong with it.
