Solid performer, default contrast high

This monitor seems to be a solid performer, but if you leave it on the default settings you will initially hate it, particularly if you have previously used a monitor with an LCD backlight. The trick is to change the contrast from 80 down to about 50 — that makes all the harshness go away. Also, if you are using a Mac (such as a Mac Mini), be sure to go into the Settings, then Display, then the Color tab and then Calibrate, follow the easy instructions and make sure you use a 2.2 gamma (if that's not already the default — whatever you do, do NOT use a 1.8 gamma!). If you do those simple things then the display will look great. I don't know why the default contrast is so high, but it probably causes many purchasers to not like the monitor initially.

The only other thing that takes some getting used to is the location of the power button. It is on the underside of the monitor, underneath the power LED, and once you have used it a few times you'll know right where it is, but to me the button just seems a bit small and hard to push (since you are pushing up, and the monitor is so lightweight that it tends to move up just a bit as you push).

On the plus side, once I got the contrast adjusted I found that the color and detail are excellent. Were it not for the bad choice in default contrast setting and the slightly inconvenient placement and design of the power button, I'd probably have given it five stars.

It took three (3) tries to get it right.

I had to take this Monitor back to Staples two times. They like to hide behind the 14 days rule, but quick to sell you something. I have brought several electronic products from staples and when it stops working, they never want to honor the return policy. They're quick to tell you to call the manufacturer.

The first time the monitor came out of the box with a crack screen. I kept thinking it was color lines on the monitor and just needed to be adjusted. Took it back to Staples and was told the screen was cracked. Staples gave me a second monitor, I took that one home and couldn't get the picture or color to focus. The picture was blurry, color was terrible and the background was green, rather then black. I took that monitor back and Staple, again, said the monitor was defective. This time Staples would not return the monitor. Staples said the purchas was past 14 days. Staples told me to call HP. Staples customer service is terrible. I called HP, they asked a few questions, and, immediately, said they would send me another monitor. I had the monitor within 3-4 days. Monitor from HP seems to plug and work and have been working perfectly for about 1 - 1 1/2 weeks.

Needed to upgrade my monitor from a CRT, and found this LED, at a great price at Staples. Called the store and they held it for me.
Beautiful color crisp fonts and picture. Sure is nice to go from 19 inch CRT (that weighed a ton to this light weight slim 23 inch).
Like the fact that there there are 3 means to connect it your computer (VGA/HDMI/DVI-D)

Nice widescreen monitor. LED backlighting makes it very thin. Wiggles a little on its stand, but overall it looks and works well. No setup needed, it auto adjusted on the Compaq PC I connected it to. It was on sale at Staples and a great buy for the sales price.

The monitor is the quality that I would expect from HP. The base for this monitor however, is quite flimsy and seems to be ready to pop out of the base plate. It may be that the weight of the monitor is too much for the provided plastic base. The range of adjustment for the base is also very limited. Very satisfied with my purchase otherwise.

  Technically speaking, an LED is also an LCD, as the screen on both is a liquid crystal display. On an LCD, the lamps at the back of the screen are fluorescent lamps, whilst on an LED the lights at the back of the screen are Light Emitting Diodes (LED).
