If one color goes, you've spent on the excess of the other two colors for nothing. I self-inject the HP 61 Black successfully for at least 2x to 3x the life of a single cartridge, but the process is far more tedious and uncertain involving the smaller resevoirs and shared printhead of the color cartridge. I print 90% in black and set grayscale. Color only if absolutely necessary. Even buying the XL black cartidge is not a bargain, since ink injection does not extend its' life in equal proportion.

While a little more than I like to pay for printer ink, these cartridges seem to last longer than the corresponding basic HP ink cartridge. We go through a lot of both color and black and white ink and we normally buy the XL cartridges because of they appear to last longer. And, the quality is very good even on basic paper products.
