I wanted only a fax machine, not an all-in-one. After reading the reviews, I decided on the HP 640. I've only been using it for a week, but so far, so good. One thing I really like is the feature that blocks junk faxes. Purchased for a home office, I use it for sending/ receiving faxes and making copies. I did have one problem with the set-up and that was in finding the option for "Distinctive Ring Pattern". In the User Guide, the feature is correctly listed in the menu overview section under "Basic Fax", but in the step-by-step directions for teaching the HP fax the ring pattern (pg 27 of the User Guide), you're incorrectly instructed to look for the DRPD under the "Advanced Fax" menu. Just in case anyone else has that problem.

I'm satisfied with the product. However, I can't even begin to express my anger after spending hours trying to set up the distinctive ring aspect of the machine. Called HP and the tech couldn't help me. After an hour or so on the phone, he offered to send me another unit. A "refurbished" one. I hung up on him and went back to work. After probably a total of 8 hours I figured it out. It could have been very simple if your "user guide" had explained how many rings to put in "rings to answer" and number of rings in "man RCV code" when connecting to answer machine and using distinctive ring from phone company.

I kept using other peoples fax machines when I needed to send them. Recently I've had to fax A LOT of stuff and I went to the store to use theirs and it cost more to fax my ton of papers than it was to purchase one. This one is AWESOME for the money. It sends them quickly and quietly! I love using it now that I finally have one of my own. I strongly suggest this to anyone. I don't usually use fax machines too often, but this is perfect for me and my small needs, business needs. :) Very happy customer
doesn't have a good speakerphone that i can talk into while doing work. also, no good way to track calls with caller ID. It's fine as a basic fax, but if you are also using it as a phone, i woudn't recommend.
