I was a rep for Canon several years back. You cannot base your "number of pages per ink cartridge" based on what is on the box. It depends on what type document you are printing. All Canon (and also Ricoh, Savin, and most other large laser machines) are dry toner. EVERY toner cartridge will state: BASED ON 6% COVERAGE. You will almost NEVER get the recommended "pages" written on dry or ink toner packaging. If you take a piece of 11.5 x 8" paper and fold it crossways, then back across, and all the way down to a small square approximately 2" x 3", THAT is 6% coverage. That is the reason most people who are printing daily will go to a laser printer. It is the most cost effective way to go. Inkjet printers are inexpensive because the expense is in the ink cartridges. You can lease a nice large color laser copier for under $200.00 per month and a black/white laser copier for around $100.00 per month. Keep a running tally of how much ink you are using and then compare. You won't be any better off with another inkjet printer. They are all the same.
Regarding copy quality, especially with color, the higher "pound" the paper weight, the better the print/copy. I always use bright white 24 lb. paper, even on regular documents.
I have always used HP printers and will continue to do so until I can afford a laser printer. HP gives excellent copy/print quality if you use the correct weight paper.
