I have a HP Officejet 6000 Wireless so I have to buy HP 920 ink. I always buy the 920XL black ink packs, which are worth the money. However, these multi-packs last me 2-3 days, and sometimes less. I do not print THAT much -- I am a grad student but I often need to print one document a day, and often printing one .pdf file is enough to KILL one of the three cartridges or more. The way HP's printers work now, once ANY ONE of the cartridges becomes low on ink, the printer will not work at all. This necessitates spending a ridiculous amount of money on ink. I have spent easily $1000 this year on ink from various vendors, Staples is no worse than any other, but this ink is a RIP OFF. I thought buying a nice printer might save me some costs, but instead I am spending my hard-earned and saved money several times a week on new ink.
The 920xl means that it is a high yield cartridge. The regular 920 cartridge will yield up to 300 pages per cartridge while the 920xl will yield up to 700 pages per cartridge. However, the xl cartridges are sold individually.

Q:
Is the ink quantity (yield) the same in the individually sold cartridges verses the packages that are called "combo pack"? Also are high yield cartridges available only in black?
About the same. If you don't use it often though it does seem to dry out before it runs out.

The ink in the combo pack is the same amount as the individual cartridges. I had the same question, as there is no room for a larger cartridge in the color spaces. However, I was informed that although the cartridges are the same size, there is twice as much ink in them. They have the cyan, magenta and yellow in XL, and are much more economical. I wish there was a combo pack for the XL's, as this is my primary color printer.

Q:
I want to order new cartridges, but the model # of my printer (E709a) is not found in your products. I have an HP Office Jet 6500, and need HP ink cartridge 920. Is my model # necessary?
My Office Jet 6500 is Model E709n, it uses the 920 cartridges. I think all 6500 models use the same. Lift under the control panel, as if changing ink. There should be stickers on the left side under the cover listing the model number and ink.
