In less than a year with my new 6500 printer, I've just bought my second XL pack and can't even use it yet. The original smaller one didn't last much over 3 months, though longer than the other small color cartridges. My first black XL cartridge still shows a fair amount of ink after 6 months, which seems to promise a clear advantage in lifetime over the smaller size. For nearly triple the pages, its price of 60+% higher makes this XL the easy cartridge choice for me. I use regularly only for personal purposes. It gives me sharp, dark text and heavy bold sizes when I need those. But the smaller fonts are still clear from some of those tiny emails I must print. Its variations of line features and image patterns make spreadsheets easy to follow and help other colors to stand out. The shadings are distinct; this allows for more versatility in any area I work.

Only use the printer once in a while, last ink cartridge lasted about 3 months (I print about 5 pages a month in fastdraft quality - coupons, directions here an there). The most annoying thing though is really about the way the printer functions rather than this particular ink cartridge- I have to replace all ink cartridges not just the black one when the ink runs out for the printer to work. I have never used the color ink cartridges, but i guess they dried up, and so now I had to replace all cartridges so that i could use the black ink again.....
Yes, this ink cartridge can be used in the Officejet 6500.

Q:
Will these cartridges "expire"? I don't use my printer very often and find that I have to put in new cartridges nearly every time I print because they "expire". In fact that is the only reason I am looking for a printer, since I actually already have a nice one, apart from the print cartridges.
Cartridges usually have a shelf life of 20-24 months if kept in the proper conditions: Store the cartridge in the original packaging. Store in a cool, dry location. Keep the cartridge out of extreme temperatures.
Highlight the words you want to appear in grayscale. Click on the capital "A" at the top right of your screen and a color chart will appear. Click on the shade of gray for your words. Now click on a different location on your page, and the words selected should all be in grayscale now.

A:
when you hit the print button, before you tell it how many pages, there is a button called properties. It is in there.

Q:
Can I print JUST using black ink (e.g. monochrome) even without having to go through the extra step of setting grayscale as the print option from my computer?
Also, if the color carts. are empty, can I still print just monochrome (again, without having to set said option form my computer)?
The printer will determine if there is black and/or color ink. If there is color ink, it will print in color and not just black. In order to print in black only, you need to use the grayscale setting.

Q:
But in the photo shown here, the XL cartridge looks entirely different than the regular cart. is that a correct photo?
The XL cartridge is wider since it has more ink and prints more pages. It fits fine into the cartridge compartment when you replace the normal cart. with this XL cart.
