I have been researching for a MFP. My two finalist were the HP M2727 and the Brother 8860DN. I chose the HP for the fastest start up time and the tone cartridge has the drum built in. The Brother does not. Additionally, the front panel on the HP is less cluttered and easier to use than the Brother.
I had the printer for a month and every function works perfectly. It does print and scan over the network - unlike some reviewers that don't know how to initially set up the machine. Also, configuring it to the network was a snap. The software that comes with the printer does everything for you. The duplex function is a definite plus and the fax monitors incoming calls to an answering machine to determine if the call is a fax or not. I am very happy with my decision and would recommend this product.

I have been a loyal hp customer for many years. When my old hp all in one kept jamming, I decided to trade it in on the M2727. When I used the auto document feeder to make copies, the copies had a line approximately in the middle of the page from top to bottom. After spending eons on the phone with various hp tech support persons, and after one temp. fix failed, I was told that the problem could be due to the printer being plugged into a surge protector rather than directly into the wall outlet. After the printer was plugged into the wall outlet, the hp tech had me press the setup and cancel buttoms while turning the machine off and then on and then going through a number of other steps. Although this seemed to fix the problem, I was concerned that the problem might reoccur. The tech person said that she would see if the 30 day trial period could be extended for another month. When I did not hear back from her, I called hp tech. support again. After being on hold for approx. one hour, the very nice tech person was embarressed to report that she had been told that the trial period could not be extended. I then asked to speak to a supervisor who was extremely rude. I don't know if I just received a lemon or whether the legendary reliability of HP products is a thing of the past. Be aware in any case that the HP all in ones are power hogs that must be plugged directly into a wall outlet to work properly. Be aware also that the hp machines come with zip in the way of intructions.. and no warning whatsoever that the machine may not work properly if plugged into a surge protector.

[...] I have used HP printers before with much success. This product is extremely tempermental. It apparently does not work if the power cord is connected to a surge protector. It must be plugged directly into the outlet. According to HP technical support, there is not enough electrical power to the machine if it is powered through a surge protector. It was very difficult to get the scan function to work. The initial level HP technical support did not know how to properly configure the scan function. It took me several conversations with a technical support supervisor to finally get the scan function to work properly. The most ridiculous aspect of the machine is the fax function. According to HP technical support, the fax function will only work with a two prong telephone cord. The cord that came with the machine is 9 feet long. If you need a longer cord you are out of luck. Staples and other retailers do not carry 2 prong telephone cords; they only carry 4 prong telephone cords. I tried to purchase a longer cord from HP, but they do not seem to carry them.At this point I am sending the machine back to HP for a refund.

Comments about HP® LaserJet M2727nf Multifunction Printer:
I've had this printer for 5 months, in a small business environment.
The printing, scanning and copying functions work fine. If that's all you need, this printer will do well for you. It also sends FAXes well. If you need to reliably receive FAXes, look for another product.
The setup procedures were acceptable, but assume (incorrectly in this case) that the printer will be USB connected. The Firmware can ONLY be updated over USB. Also, I wasn't able to install the drivers on a Virtual Machine (VMare Server doesn't map USB devices), even if "Network Only" is specified.
The software took ~30 minutes to install on a fast laptop. This is excessive.
The document feeder is designed to drop dirt/dust on the scanning area, right over the scanner. This causes lines to quickly appear on copies, scans and FAXes. Frequent cleaning of the copy glass is critical.
I've had this printer replaced twice, due to problems with receiving FAXes. It still drops FAXes, and I expect it will until it's discontinued.
I've requested that HP either replace this unit with a different model, or refund the purchase price.
Service and delivery comments:
I picked this up at a store, so there were no delivery issues. For the two replacements, both were shipped next-day, but the first one took 2 weeks to get to me, and the second took one week. There appears to be a high enough failure rate on these printers that HP can't keep the return center stocked.
The HP "technical support" people have serious communications problems. They refuse to provide their names (no trackability). They like to interrupt the customer with meaningless or obvious statements, but will hang up on the customer if they even attempt to intruppt those meaningless statements. They refuse to escalate problems, and they LOVE to place customers on hold for excessively long periods of time (a "2-3" minute hold ended up at 30 minutes).
Comments about HP® LaserJet M2727nf Multifunction Printer:
This machine was purchased to replace an aging HP 3030 Flatbed MFP. When we installed the m2727, the setup was easy as you can expect from an HP device. Inbound faxing worked flawlessly. Printing was ok, though it was a pain to reach all the way under the scanning bed to retrieve documents. However, we were not able to send faxes.
All faxes were put into the queue and never sent out. After calls with HP tech support, they ruled the device defective so we swapped it out with a new one from Staples. Again, the next brand new unit had the same issues. Inbound faxing worked fine, but no matter what settings were made on the device, all outbound faxes were put in the send queue and never sent. Sometimes if we removed the phone cord from the back and replugged it back in, the first fax in queue would go out, but no others.
Further calls to HP Support were made, but all were fruitless. Settings were changed, firmware was flashed, but the device couldn't send faxes. We are using a VoIP system with an analog card for faxing. All of our other fax machines (all older HPs) work flawlessly.
We exchange the m2727 for the lower model m1522nf and had the EXACT same problems. I am pretty sure at this point that HP changed manufacturers of their modem chipsets and we are having problems with it.
Comments about HP® LaserJet M2727nf Multifunction Printer:
The print on our letter head was speckled all over the page. It may have been a defective printer since I have never had that problem with our other HPs. But, I had to return it within the 14 day window so I never figured it out. I bought a Dell 1815dn to replace it and that seems to work fine.
