A joy to use

This printer replaced an eleven-year-old HP LaserJet 4100 that I loved but could no longer use effectively because it required a parallel port, which my new computer didn't have. I could use it via a parallel-to-USB adapter cable, but it frequently threw errors printing legal-sized pages (which I do a lot), and the feed on Tray 1 (the MP tray) needed service (it would feed multiple sheets, then jam), making it difficult to print legal and virtually impossible to duplex manually. This printer is a step down from the 4100, with smaller paper capacity (300 sheets vs. 600) and no straight-through paper path, but I can definitely live with that given the increased speed (35 ppm vs. 25) and the ability to duplex automatically--without jams or print errors. So far it has handled everything I've thrown at it with ease. The slightly smaller size is also a benefit, giving me a little more room on my desk. The black color (vs. putty) is a mixed blessing; I definitely know when I need to dust!

So far I have been unable to access the touted "business apps," which require a network connection. I connected the printer to my router via Ethernet but am still unable to get it to connect to the Internet. I'm sure this is a result of my ignorance, and I wasn't expecting to use the ePrint capability or other apps, anyway, so it is just a minor annoyance as a matter of principle.

The printer seems to have a few quirks that make it inefficient. It is very hard to use it to print envelopes, even though HP says it will do them. The manual feed tray (for envelopes, etc.) is not easy to use, and does not seem to feed properly. When printing some documents where speed is not the issue, the printer properties do not seem to cause it to print at a higher resolution at a slower speed. It always seems to want to print in Draft mode as fast as it can go. I would not consider this to be one of HPs best products.

It was very easy to setup on my local network. I have two laptop computers and a desktop computer that make up my network and I got all of them communicating with the printer in a very short time. It is extremely fast and I especially like the way it can print on two sides of one page. This feature alone will save me money on paper. I like the touchscreen and all of the menu options. It is easy to select your subject and to obtain information about the printer that you desire to read. It has proven to be an excellent replacement for the older HP printer that I have been using for over 10 years.

The printer arrived in good shape and was super easy to set up and connect to the network. I suggest you identify your printer by name or address in your network settings so there's no hunting for it when you go to print. It's fast and the duplexing feature is great. We got a second paper tray, which is super. Only complaint is the Windows print driver. On the Mac, after installing the new paper tray, when I went to print the driver immediately recognized the new tray and so it was one of the options. On Windows tray 3 would not appear. Turns out you have to go all the way back out to print properties and enable the tray, and then enable it as one of the options. Then you are set. We've been experimenting with the hp eprint, which seems useful. It works anyway, not sure if it's just a nifty trick or if it's actually a time saver. Anyway, for the money this thing rocks. Hopefully it holds up!
