This printer is excellent value. Cost is low and it performs the basic business tasks. I haven't tried graphics, so don't know how they will look.

I did have a slight bit of trouble with setup, because the instructions are purely graphical and in one step the level of detail is insufficient. Figured it out before breaking something, though, and it's working fine.

I've only had this printer for a few weeks so haven't put it through all its paces, yet, but I did have some trouble printing envelopes. Between the non-Office software instructions and the printer instructions, which contradict each other, I finally figured it out, but wasted a number of envelopes the first time. Would like it better if there was a straight-through feed so the envelopes wouldn't develop a curl; not very professional.

Another drawback is the published maximum of 6 feet for a USB cable. I want the printer on my credenza, with the laptop on my desk, and 6 feet is stretching the distance. Would also be nice if the required cable was listed on the printer box, so it could be purchased at the same time.

Tray capacity is supposedly 260 sheets, so it should hold half a ream. I've split a ream perfectly in half, though, and the 250 sheets don't quite fit. This is 20 pound paper, which is what the spec is for, so don't know what the deal is there.

The power-saving feature is great, but the printer turns itself off too soon for my liking and I haven't yet found a way to adjust the timing. If it exists, then this is a comment on the documentation. If it doesn't, then it's a comment on the printer design.

I haven't used the printer long enough to get a really good idea, but it seems to be using toner a little more quickly than I expected. However, I'm printing dense documents (best example is IRS publications), which may use more toner than the standard test page -- whatever that may be. Your mileage may vary!

I'm used to working with larger printers, so my expectations for this one were low. It does exceed all my expectations, so I'm happy with it. It's quite fast, even in duplex mode. I recommend it for light duty offices, but if you do a LOT of printing you might consider a printer in the next higher level or two.

I bought this as a shared network printer for home. There are four of us and it makes sense to share a laser printer. The initial setup was fast and easy. I changed the IP to hard-coded and we were up and running. After a few weeks I had to reinstall the printer. The IP had reset. I left it dynamic during this install but after a week the printer was disconnected again. I tried to install again but the printer has lost the ability to connect to the wireless network. I connected it via USB to my server (yes it is overkill but I run SBS 2003 on my home network)and shared the printer. When I have time I will return it to HP.

If you add paper to it make sure you test it when printing to a pre-printed form for alignment. Other than that have no other complaints on this model.

I tried for over four hours to load the software from the CD, to no avail.
I then downloaded the complete software from HP and still could not get it to load. It's the first time HP has let me down.
I returned it and bought a Lexmark because they did not have another 1606 in stock.
As a writer i was desparate for a printer.

I'm getting some kind of smudge down the right side of the paper when I print. I have cleaned the cartridge roller and other rollers in the printer, but the same smudge is still there. Could this be a bad cartridge?

  According to the manual you can do the following:
  â— If toner smears appear on the leading edge of the media, the media guides might need to be wiped with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  â— Try a different quality paper with 4 to 6% moisture content, possibly a 100 or 250 Sheffield paper.
  â— If the fuser temperature is too low, make sure the appropriate media type is selected in your printer properties
  â— Test again by running another printout in quiet mode. You do this by opening the printer properties, click on "Device Settings Tab" and then enable Quiet Mode.
  â— Suggest installing a new cartridge.

Q:
Purchased this printer about a month ago. Going through toner cartridge every 14-18 days, even on economy setting. I know that the yield is supposed to be 2100 copies per cartridge. There is no way we are getting that & we haven't been that busy. Our previous HP printer & cartridge would last about 6 weeks with a yield of 2500 copies, that's during a busy time of year. Any idea on what we are doing wrong?
