It features a 35 page document feeder on top to use with the copy, fax or scan function on the device. As a departure from the past HP Inkjet printers the print head is not on the ink cartridge, they are separate as found in Epson Ink printers. Another welcome difference is the ink comes in four different cartridges as found in the color laser printers; which means no more changing the color cartridge when just one color is low. Ink comes at two price points a standard and XL size with double the amount of ink, but not at double the price.

Connections to this device are a snap with three available; Ethernet(cable), wifi and USB. It is also possible using the supplied HP software to scan and fax from every computer regardless of the connection method.

Drivers for various operating systems are available:
Windows XP(SP3) 32bit, Vista 32 & 64bit and Windows7 32 & 64bit
MAC OS X, 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7
Linux main distributions
BSD is not supported

Envelope or card stock printing is possible via a single manual feed from the rear or multiple from the bottom paper tray. When using the bottom tray the standard letter size paper must be removed and replaced with the envelopes.

Standard letter size paper printing will use a single side or both sides using the included duplex function if selected before sending to the printer. Quality is also adjustable to minimize the ink in draft mode or max in best mode with a middle mode that balances good quality and ink consumption.

A front USB and SD card reader in the front make it possible to print directly from a USB flash drive or SD card.

The power save function will put the unit in sleep low power mode in as little as 5 minutes or as long as 30 minutes with various settings between the two. A fax, print or scan will wake the unit up to perform the function and then back to sleep after the configured time.

Should you be have past experience with OfficeJet offerings and the difficulty with the software, it seems HP finally worked out the bugs and are solid out of the box. Since most keep our home printers for years, this is a unit which seems to be able to deliver solid performance and reach features that will not break the bank.

Destroyed my originals

I was pleased with the quality of the print and colors. Everything after that was a disappointment. The picture-based set-up instructions didn't tell me what to do if the color cartridges tray refused to move into a position where I could load the cartridges. The automatic document feeder crumpled and creased my originals no matter how carefully I aligned them. The sliding pieces that hold the originals in place are curved rather than flat, allowing the papers to creep up and over the curve and then enter the printer at various angles. Besides destroying my originals, this resulted in printed copies with text printed at a different angle on every page. It also caused phantom lines to print at the bottom of some pages. In addition, the originals emerged and collected directly under the feeder tray. There is no room for a hand to reach in and get them. Instead, you must reach around to the end of the printer and jerk up on the feeder tray to dislodge it and then retrieve your originals, then replace the feeder tray, etc. There is no way I'm going to do this every time I copy documents. Finally, the duplexer, which is especially highlighted as a feature of this model, has limited uses. From the computer, it can print 2 single pages back-to-back on a single sheet. From the printer, however, it cannot automatically print 2-sided copies from 2-sided originals; this requires manually turning the paper, which can be done on any printer without a duplexer. After 3 frustrating days, I am returning this machine for a refund.

We test these things and have stacked the OJ 8600 up against lasers from Brother, Dell and Samsung. Feature set, cost per page, ease of maintenance, software, ease of use and image quality were superior on all counts.

Used in home for personal and some business. Major improvement over 6500 that we had. 8600 much faster printing and better print quality. Major hole in setup instructions - Initial setup gets thru unpacking and plugging in. CD starts with loading program and then tells you to connect via USB or whatever. No instructions tell that you MUST activate 8600 via on screen display BEFORE you can connect to computer.

This is a very good printer. The large footprint is the only drawback. It can be connected via USB, ethernet or wireless. I have it setup on my home and office PCs as both USB and wireless. I noticed that one of the cons listed is noisy. If you think this printer is not quiet then you must not have very much experience with printers. All the functions are easy to use. I love the power save options, especially it's ability to automatically turn itself on and off at specific times of the day. I've had this about 5 weeks and I am very pleased with it. I did think the instructions on the setup could have been better but that was minor. I would and have already recommended this printer to others.

  Yes. The maximum capacity of the document feeder is 35 sheets. The manual explains that you can initiate a scan either from either the control panel or from within the HP Scan application.

  The Officejet 8600 can scan legal size pages, but only if you use the automatic document feeder. This is required in order feed the longer media. The scanner bed itself measures 8.5 x 11.7 in and is too small to handle legal sized pages. The maximum scan size for the automatic document feeder is 8.5 x 14 in. The printer can print on legal sized media.

I was wondering about how fast the scanning feature is. I am looking for an affordable printer/scanner for my home office...I typically scan batches of up to 100 pages, so scanning speed is a necessity. I see that you can load up to 35 pages at a time to scan, which is great, but like I said, the speed of the scanner is also important.

  At the lowest settings you can get 5.6 pages per minute according to the manufacturer. However that number will go down if you need higher resolution.
